Depends on the airline
But most if my first class redemptions have had less than $100 in taxes and fees

YVR to HKG economy uses 60,000 Avios Points and 300 dollars in taxes. (not super worth it with all these flight deals happening).

For domestic flights like HKG to Taiwan/Singapore etc, it's around 10-20k points round trip with $50 taxes. Domestic European flights should be similar.

With 27k points you could squeeze 2 domestic international flights or one North American Flight.

You could make a British Airways account to see how much it would cost in terms of points and taxes. With the Avios Rewards program you are limited to the OneWorld Alliance only though.

You could also transfer to the American Airlines AAdvantage Program, but I'm not too familiar with their points and tax system.

Do the Avios points expire?
I searched HKG to Singapore is 35K points. Did they increased it?

Yes, they expire every 36 months. Is 35K in Business or First? They did increase it for premium cabins recently.

Slifer 03-07-2016 02:04 PM

35K for economy

Are you sure? Did you do a connecting flight or something? HKG-SIN is 10K in economy. See pic I posted below...

Oh, 1 way is 10K but return flight is 35K? Hmmm

That doesn't sound right either. BA charges per segment. 2x 10K = 20K. Check if your return flight has a stopover somewhere... Is it stopping in Kuala Lumpur?

Slifer 03-08-2016 03:57 PM

I see, it cost more if there is layover somewhere? You would think it would cost more points for a direct flight.

Nope. That's the good thing and bad thing about Avios.

Not sure when was the last time you looked. I'm too lazy to open BA.com right now, but more like like $60 bucks. CX's YQ have been eliminated a few months ago.

a) Layover somewhere = 2 flights. BA/Avios will have to pay two airlines/flights for your seat.

b) If there's more than one carrier (airline) involved in an Avio redemption booking, the amount of points required is different. There's two separate charts. To put it into perspective, one way for Econ:

YVR-HKG on CX: 30,000 Avios
YVR-NRT on JL (25k) + NRT-HKG on JL (10k) = 35,000 total
YVR-NRT on JL + NRT-HKG on CX = 60,000 total

Looks like you are right...taxes got cheaper? last I booked was few years ago. 60,000 avios points is return. One way is 30K.

Anyone collecting Alaska Airlines miles?

How's the program in term of award redemption?

I was with UA/*A, then shifted to AA/OW... but after the severe devaluation, it no longer makes much sense to collect their miles. I'm now thinking switching to Alaska.

One thing I'm going to miss are the lounge access from alliances... but who the fuck cares about lounges when I barely use them anymore (I tend to arrive basically the absolute last minute so I can head almost straight to gate)

beatdownvictim 03-31-2016 09:11 AM

Okay not exactly a credit card point post
But was wondering about upgrading with Asia miles from prem economy to business.

On FT forums the guide says I have to call Cathay sales to hold the seats then call Asia miles to redeem then call back Cathay to pay then call Asia miles with the ticket number.
Seems like a long damn process.
Can anyone confirm?
Too poor to pay for j

Sadly, Alaska MVP program just had a massive devaluation for their Emirates redemptions... with ABSOLUTELY NO NOTICE. :yuno:

This is very bad news... Makes me worried of what's going to happen next.

WOW: Alaska HUGELY Devalues Emirates First Class Award Costs Without Notice - One Mile at a Time

noclue 03-31-2016 03:28 PM

wow what a jump!

damn it CX is going to be next on the chopping block.
AS points are worthless after that one.

crap...

CX was the reason I'm planning on jumping ship.

Fucking airline alliances no longer seem to appreciate our loyalty (or lol-yalty)... and I know it's not much comparing to other true frequent flyers, but I ended spending over 20k USD in 2015 between me and my wife on flights.

I think 2016 is my last year with AA, after I get EXP by summer and burn all the SWU in early 2017, I'm done. I will just travel on the cheapest J I can find from there on.

And on the side-note... airlines should really try to make Y more tolerable. I have been traveling strictly in J for any flight longer than 6hrs from mid-2015. The recent changes on Y are making travel in Y like sardine cans, and my fuck'd up back is not helping in this issue. :fuckthatshit:

total noob here but ive been collecting aeroplan points strictly off of signup bonuses, have about 100k. tried looking at redeeming some and with the general cheapness of flying these days, paying so much tax and all your points just doesnt seem as worth it as it might have been back in the day. should i ditch the aeroplan and start collecting something else? so many blackout dates as well.

roastpuff 05-20-2016 10:21 AM

You gotta do it right - the worthy redemptions are premium classes, with carriers that charge little to no fuel surcharge. Definitely not worth redeeming it on Air Canada, especially for economy.

EVA Air, United, Turkish, ANA, Air China, Ethiopian, Swiss - just a few examples.

Of course, the one airline where the YQ (fuel surcharge) is worth it is Lufthansa First Class. You can minimize the surcharges by flying from countries that limit or prohibit taxes on airfare, such as Scandinavian ones.

Aeroplan is still very useful. Just have to use it wisely. Do some research on Flyertalk, there's a lot of information out there.

Has anyone ever used Amex MR points or Aeroplan points for hotel/accomodations? Is it totally not worth it?

Not worth it. Redemption value is below what I value each AP or MR point as.

Just use it as points for cash for the next 6 months after your travel purchase. :drunk:

RickyTan3 06-03-2016 03:52 AM

So I got a shit ton of points transferred from avion to asia miles.

Anyone have experience booking through them? Been trying to find flights through asia miles and everything is FULL.

Seems pretty cheap 2 120k points for business class yvr to hkg?

G 07-07-2016 08:32 AM

Forgot how shitty/hard it is to book a multi-city on AP with direct flights on the dates you want. :rukidding::yuno:
