mr00jimbo | 02-16-2016 11:28 AM | Auto thefts and break-ins on the rise? 3 weeks or so ago my girlfriend woke me up early in the AM to tell me her truck was missing. I called the city to see if it was towed for some reason but nope - stolen. It was a truck without an alarm or an immobilizer.
It was found in Surrey with damage to the steering column and all of her clothes, sunglasses, and shoes taken. They left her book (Surrey RCMP had a laugh about that one).
That week I noticed a few more instances of shattered glass on the ground on other blocks near where I live. I live in a good area in Vancouver where I don't recall this ever being a common occurrence in the past. Today I saw my neighbour outside vacuuming out glass - they broke into his truck.
Now obviously you can't prevent auto theft from happening 100% but I want to make this thread to remind people to take precautions. I myself need to heed my own damn advice because I'm the person who leaves my iPad on the passenger seat if I'm in a good area. So many times I left it overnight! Hell, in the early 2000's when I was into car audio, i had the sticker logo for the aftermarket speaker brand on my window!
I'm changing my ways and you should too - keep nothing of value in your vehicle! Keep it clean and tidy so that if people DO look through the glass, they're not tempted to rifle through all your clutter in hopes of finding something valueable. Ensure that your doors are locked. Hopefully invest in an alarm. I think they took my GF's truck because it was an older model with no alarm and no immobilizer. Look into an alarm, and perhaps an immobilizer or a kill switch.
Steering wheel clubs are good, but they can also be defeated. They make a club but for your brake pedal which is apparently extremely difficult to cut through.
Park in well lit areas and if the street lights near you are burnt out, call 311 (if you live in Vancouver) or your local city to report it.
And if you notice suspicious people, call the police to report it.
Everybody knows all this stuff so I sound like a broken record of course, but if anything it serves as a reminder to protect your stuff because it seems to be quite prevalent lately. |
