02 Accord surging RPM's I don't know much about cars but my 02 accord's rpm is surging, I don't have a code reader :( any insights as to what it might be would be appreciated before I take it to the shop. Thanks! |
My prelude did this before when it had a bad ground on the battery / loose vacuum line. Should check those first. Otherwise it could be anything... A bad IACV can do it as well |

its got a vacuum leak. Possibley loose vacuum line somewhere |
Since you changed your battery maybe the computer is not able to adapt to the dirty throttle body. Clean out the throttle body, where the throttle plate sits. It is probably very dirty and this affects minimum idle on the vehicle. |
changing the battery shouldn't cause any idle surging like that. If you were to use your finger and close off the base idle port, the idle valve should still be able to "open up" and compensate for that without much problem, as long as all else is ok. To me it looks like a large enough air/vacuum leak to the point where the idle valve can't compensate "close" enough to bring idle within spec. ecm puts the idle valve in this surge mode. Last time i seen something like this, the pcv valve was clogged, its hose collapsed and had split open. If your check engine light is on, that could point to a whole other direction too. |
vacuum leak or idle air control valve is dirty |
Most likely vacuum leak. A dirty idle air control valve would likely just stall out as it can't keep airflow in while throttle is closed. Still a good idea to clean it though - when I cleaned my IACV for the first time in 10 years on my '00 accord, it was dirty as shit lol. |
It was due to a dirty throttle body. Thanks guys |
geez, guess i've been out of the trade too long. Giving out bad advise now :twirleye: |
If the throttle body is dirty enough on a drive by wire vehicle, it can also case stalling problems too after the battery is changed. |
