Hi,

So doing some research and can't find a solution, lets see if the local revscene nerds can figure this out. :drunk:

I am trying to run as many VM as possible 100-200 would be ideal.
They would be used with Windows 2012 Server or just basic Windows 2010 (if rdp is available not sure?)

They would be using basic browsing so not much power needed in them.

I am looking at dedicated servers, dedicated cloud. Even personal computers. Nothing can seem to handle it.

Any ideas?

Just curious, why do you need to run so many VM? And are you looking to run this many on a SINGLE machine?

When you want to run that many VMs, you are limited by the available memory on the host server.

I implemented and I am maintaining a VMware ESX environment at work. We have 4 host servers with 4 processors, each CPU has 8 physical + 8 hyper-threading cores, bundled with 1 TB of memory on each server.

Each host runs about 60 VMs, sometimes up to 70 VMs depending on user requirements. That's 240 to 280 VMs spreading across 4 host servers. All hosts are connected via Fiber to a 16 TB storage array.

Each VM is assigned 2 cores, 8 GB of RAM, and 80 GB of hard drive space. When a VM is powered on and running, the host's RAM is dedicate allocated to the VM. No other process can use that RAM.

Back to your question. If you want to run 200 VM on one box, you want to spec out a ton of RAM. Mind you, the OS on each VM has a minimum requirement on RAM as well. For example, if you want 200 Windows 7 VMs, you want at least 4 GB each, so 800 GB of RAM on the host.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here, but your performance will suffer quite significantly.

you need at least the minimum requirements of the OS you plan to run for your vm servers, times the number of servers you want to run.
so you'd probably need a rack with at least 3-4 high end servers with dual cpu slots.

Hm.. a proper functioning VM environment is not cheap. The up-front cost is quite steep. With all the hardware and addition with the software licensing, the whole project stated above was about $250k.

THE FUCK - 10-20k was my budget

Was looking at Microsoft Azure cloud systems that was about 10k a month but the VM was slow as shit because it was on a cloud platform

It would depend on what you're actually doing with them, but have you looked into some Linux distros that might reduce the hardware requirements for each "machine"?

20K budget for 200 VMs? Whoa...
Look at Microsoft HyperV. They were the cheapest solution when I was doing research.

Azure lets you run 200 VM's for 10k a month? Those must be pretty watered down specs. Just cause it's cloud doesn't mean it's slow.

Even HyperV Hosts is gonna cost a lot. A single one of our VM hosts is easily $20K and that's with no storage and no OS and only 512GB RAM. Running 200VM's on your own hardware is not going to be anywhere around 20K.
