China’s Zotye rolling out Porsche Macan knockoff

China?s Zotye rolling out Porsche Macan knockoff

The all-new Zotye SR8 has been spied this week, but you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’ve seen it before.

If you thought you were looking at a Porsche Macan, you wouldn’t be alone. And, despite the glaring similarities, the Chinese car maker’s SUV will make its market debut at this month’s Beijing motor show.

New spy shots indicate that the similarities with the Macan run deeper than just the exterior, with these new images showing the interior borrows many design components from the Macan as well.

The SR8 (previously known as the T700) has been labelled a clear knockoff, but it won’t surprise those familiar with the Chinese auto market to learn that Zotye’s SUV has been approved for sale.

Last year, the companies Changan Auto and Jiangling Motors Corporation collaborated on the Landwind X7, a clear copy of the Range Rover Evoque.

Land Wind X7 given go-ahead for sale, Evoque copying claims dismissed ? report

Jaguar Land Rover attempted to take action against the companies, but eventually abandoned its effort.

While many may think it would be easy for car companies to protect their assets when it comes to other companies adopting their designs, legal action against car makers like Zotye has largely been ignored by Chinese authorities.

Plagiarism claims aside, power in the SR8 will come from a 142kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine supplied by Mitsubishi, married to either a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The SR8 is expected to hit Chinese dealerships in the second half of this year, with pricing to start at around 170,000 yuan ($34,005 AUD). By comparison, the Porsche Macan is priced at 588,000 yuan ($117,583 AUD)

it's an almost carbon copy of the macan console... if anything, the zoyte actually has less buttons:

i'm surprised with all that CF interior bits, this particular macan doesn't have aluminum pedals?

Galactic_Phantom 04-21-2016 05:15 PM

Knowing Porsche's a la carte option menu aluminum pedals probably cost an extra $700 :fuckthatshit:

flagella 04-21-2016 05:40 PM

That's actually one of the better looking knockoffs lol.

Harvey Specter 04-21-2016 05:47 PM

Yah, this is a pretty good rep now imagine if they start cloning supercars, shit lol.

dark0821 04-23-2016 09:00 AM

lol.... if they have gone this far.... the factory should offer a "de-badge" package... will probably boost the sales number even more lol....

and then some random guy can sell ebay Porsche badges outside the dealership....

see... perfect business strategy

It's called reverse-engineering. Google it, you can scan all the parts for example, and make carbon copy of it. It's fractions of cost than developing a new vehicle from ground up.

damn china,

bootleg dvd's in the 2000's and now all the way to bootleg cars.

I thought they were oblivious to that? They seem to think they're some sort of superpower and that they are the best despite their low education, shitty government, shitty technological advances etc etc.

from an engineering stand point they are great at manufacturing and yes reverse engineering. IMO it's not as easy as it sounds to copy someone's shit and figure out how it works.

reminds me when a partnering firm sent a german engineer to visit & work with us and he shared a joke in one of his presentations to a room full of chinese engineers:

a client asks german engineers and chinese engineers to design something
german engineers spend a month to research, a month to discuss client requests, a month to brainstorm, a month to discuss the best design method, a month to execute, a month to test/debug, a month to manufacture
chinese engineers asks how much you want to spend and has a product in 6 weeks

i thought he was pretty bang on :lol
