3rd party car rental insurances
 

I am booking a car for a trip to portland with some friends (needed a van).

I dont have a credit card that offers insurance coverage (and I was told CC's only offer secondary and partial coverages anyways)... Avis charges an arm and a leg for their insurances, so im thinking of going to a 3rd party. Does anyone have any recommendations? So far I've found:

for about 50 cdn, i get all the coverages offered by Avis for my 1 week trip. Or should i avoid this company?

ICBC roadstar plus is the cheapest. Also check your credit card if it has car rental insurance. However note that some credit cards doesn't cover cars over a certain MSRP or weight like a truck or GM full size SUV.

Who told you this? the rental company probably. You gotta understand, they'll do anything to get you to purchase their coverage. Makes sense as they make most of their profit from the coverage the upsell you on.

The CC coverage is only for cars that are under 60-70k MSRP.
If you call the cc insurance division, they'll tell you basically you can rent anything that isn't a supercar/ultra lux
(Bentley, Lambo, etc). Cars like MB's, Volvo's etc are covered

I've rented dozens of cars in the past 10 years in AB and BC. When I did have an issue, (once I got a huge stone chip in the windshield of an Impala back in 2011) the rental company charged my car for the damages, and the CC companies insurance fully re-imbursed me.

Just a note of caution: if you use third party coverage; rental companies will ding you on your credit card at first for any damages (whether in form of deductible, or cost of fixing) and it's up to approval of third party for reimbursement - opposed to potentially totalling a car and just leaving the keys and go
