What's a good reliable VPN?

Hey guys.

Curious how many people use VPN. What type of speeds are you to expect?

I just subscribed to Private Internet Access and can't even surf the internet. Takes forever to load things. I've tried multiple servers, mucking with the settings and installing new ethernet drivers. No difference in speed.

I tried a speed test and got like 140ms ping and max 20mbps download using PIA.

I was reading that some other VPN's hit 80mbps.

SkinnyPupp 09-19-2016 06:47 PM

PIA is way higher than 80 mbps, there must be a setting problem or something. It actually makes my connection faster when going through their Singapore server to connect to NA servers.

Iceman_2K 09-19-2016 09:47 PM

I use PIA too and i'm way way higher than what you've got. I connect through the Seattle servers all the time.

I use PIA as well and here are my speed test results for reference:

PIA is pretty good.. got a great deal for 2 years...

Cman333 09-20-2016 07:08 PM

It's weird. It works great for like 15 mins, then goes to crap for an hour. On and off randomly. I'm corresponding with their techs to see if I can fix this.

That's my speed with VPN on, I'm on the TO server, port forwarded. The guys at PIA said only these servers are Port Forward capable.

i use PIA as well, however, only for torrenting. the speeds I get via the socks5 with the netherland proxy, remains the same as if i wasn't on PIA. same speed as my local speed.

nicolebyer727 09-20-2016 10:09 PM

I have used PIA and PureVPN.

Speed wise am happy with PureVPN.

Cman333 09-20-2016 10:21 PM

PIA's tech support is quite helpful. I think I've got it resolved, my download speeds still mediocre, but my torrent speed is acceptable now after port forwarding, I can now browse at an acceptable speed due to making some DNS adjustments and adjusting some settings on utorrent.

Didn't realize utorrent program could throttle your whole internet connection.

SkinnyPupp 09-20-2016 10:46 PM

utorrent is shit, maybe try qbtorrent instead

mk1freak 09-21-2016 12:26 AM

going to need to renew my vpn soon, looking at NordVPN anyone have any experience with them? they have a decent deal at $96 for 2 years($4/mth), not much more than PIA but according to Nord VPN site they have over 500 servers.
30 day money back guarantee as well

TIA

FerrariEnzo 09-21-2016 12:31 PM

SkinnyPup should have loads of info on VPN... I got PIA because of the RS deal.. lol

Nlkko 09-21-2016 04:04 PM

PIA you need to let it connect auto. I find that it selects the best server for you that way (usually will be US Silicon Valley, on rare occasion Seattle). Speed is quick enough to torrent in a decent amount of time if you have a good internet speed to start with (I have 150)

mk1freak 09-21-2016 04:59 PM

yea hoping skinny will chime in soon vs me pm stalking him :ifyouknow:

I'd just stick with PIA, they are known and well regarded in terms of performance and even more important - security.

Do you have details or instructions for the port forwarding fix? Or did you just select 'port forwarding' in the PIA VPN app?

My internet is also noticeably slower when connected to PIA.

Here's what I got:

Quote:

Torrents are unique in how the tech works, in comparison to FTP or P2P. To download a torrent, you connect to a tracker, which contains a listing within it's swarm of seeds and peers. Each seed and peer uses a torrent application to feed the torrent to the swarm. However, approximately 4 in 5 torrent clients block anonymous inbound connections, and thus prevent you from connecting to them to feed from them. There is no way around this, and its entirely dependent on what torrent clients seeds/peers happen to be using within any given tracker. As such, you'd rarely see more than maybe 20-40% of your normal speeds while connected to any anonymous connection in torrents, due to this fact.

With that said, this likely isn't the sole cause of speed or connectivity issues in torrents. This is a very common issue with torrent programs; many require port forwarding to be enabled, in order for them to work correctly (uTorrent, for example). While we can't help you configure your torrent client, we can certainly tell you how to get the port information you need to configure it.

The only way to get a port assigned for use with your torrent client is to use our application to connect. You need to right-click on the Private Internet Access application in your system tray, and choose Settings, then click Advanced. Put a checkmark in Port Forwarding, save it, and connect to one of the port forwarding-capable servers:

CA Toronto
CA Montreal
Netherlands
Switzerland
Sweden
France
Germany
Romania
Israel

While connected to one of these gateways, wait approximately 30-60 seconds, then hover over the PIA application's icon in your system tray; you'll get a small tool-tip window come up, which will include a port number. This randomly-assigned port is what you need to enter into your torrent client, to get it to function correctly.

In addition to using port forwarding, you can also try changing the ports the VPN uses to connect; this can help with a variety of issues, including improving overall connection speed:

Which OS are you using?

What is the encryption set to in the application settings?

Does the browsing issue occur on multiple web browsers?

Difficulty with browsing is generally a DNS issue.

Avoiding this is quite simple. If you statically assign your DNS settings on your network adapter to use a public DNS (our DNS servers - 209.222.18.222 and 209.222.18.218), you should be able to browse again. If you require steps on how to make this change, please refer to one of these articles:

Windows: https://support.privateinternetacces...ngs-in-Windows

Mac: https://support.privateinternetacces...ettings-in-OSX

Android (Wifi only): https://support.privateinternetacces...oid-Wifi-only-

iOS: https://support.privateinternetacces...iOS-Wifi-only-

Linux (using Network Manager) - https://support.privateinternetacces...twork-Manager-

If our DNS is already configured there and you still have the same issue, you could also try another DNS in place of ours:

Level 3 (209.244.0.3 and 209.244.0.4)

Please ensure the following is configured in your router, to allow unimpeded access to our services through that device:

The following ports are allowed and unrestricted:
OpenVPN uses UDP: 53, 1194, 8080 and 9201 TCP: 80, 110, 443
L2TP uses UDP 500, 1701, and 4500
PPTP uses TCP 1723 or Protocol 47 (GRE)
VPN passthrough is enabled for all protocols
Port forwarding is not enabled
QoS is not enabled

People still able to access Netflix US with VPNs, or is it pretty much all but dead now?

FerrariEnzo 09-24-2016 02:56 PM
