Low KM's in Acura RDX
 

Have a 2015 Acura RDX and it used to show ~500 - 550KM when I first got the car with a full tank.

Nowadays it's consuming 14.6L/100KM and after I fill it with gas it only shows around ~440KM but I usually only get around 350KM of driving. I refill when it has 2 bars of gas left...

Have been doing oil changes myself but haven't brought car in for any maintenance at all - should I bring it in or any suggestions on what I should check out? Seem so to be giving low mileage...

there's more to maintenance than just oil changes. What's the current tire pressure compared to the recommended by Acura?

have you checked the air pressure in the tires? the air filter?

i've had a 2013 rdx and now drive a 2017 rdx.

need more details:

1. what is your percentage of city vs hwy driving?
2. what gas are you using? rdx recommends premium 91
3. whats your driving like? i.e. jack rabbit starts etc (i know its tempting with that gorgeous 3.5L V6)
4. what is the current mileage on your RDX?

Tire pressure is usually 220 KPA and right now it's around 200 so slight drop. Always been monitoring the pressure so I don't think this is the problem.

Acura604:

1. 90% city driving, 10% highway
2. 91 Chevron
3. Slow starts at lights and anticipate red light coming on so I cruise to the light and light braking...

who measures tire pressure in kilopascals LOL. its all about pounds per square inch(PSI) my friend.

you didn't mention the engine air filter. people ofter over look it and dont end up realizing how much harder the engine has to work to breathe..

The car monitors the pressure in kpa :/

how many km are on the car currently? air filters are only good for 20k km or so.

Are you driving with the front defroster or AC on?

Honestly if you drive city that's about right. There could be little things you can do to make it better but it's about right.

Its your fuel map, its got a nasty hole...thats why you're unloading in third.

1) Accelerate slower
2) Turn off A/C when not needed
3) Fill tires and check alignment if you've hit any nasty bumps

I had the same thing happen to me, only to realize it was driving habits.

PS, if it's under warranty, why not have them look at it?

The warranty on my 2013 RDX just expired a month ago, so surely yours is still covered... why not take it in to the dealer and have them take a look? If they recommend any work that's going to be $$$ and you smell bullsh*t, there's no obligation to pay. (And if it was something that needed early replacement causing your crappy fuel economy, it would very possibly be covered under warranty anyway.)

To be honest, though, I doubt there's anything wrong with the car. My RDX is driven by the wife 99% of the time (80% city, 20% highway) and last time I checked, average gas mileage over the last few thousand km's was 13.7L/100km. She doesn't make any effort to save fuel, but doesn't drive it hard, either. I don't think it's unusual to be averaging ~14L/100km if you're doing lots of city driving (esp in traffic) given how much better the RDX is on the highway compared to the city.... big V6 is thirsty in low gears and accelerating. How much of your driving is spent in heavy traffic? Lots of stop-and-go shit? That could def explain it.

This almost certainly won't help fuel economy at all, and probably doesn't matter one bit, but from what I've read the general consensus is that Shell 91 is considered the top choice in BC.

Also, I'm assuming you only drive in full automatic? Forget the paddles IMO, doubtful you'd be able to drive it more economically than the auto trans can.

A lot of people are not aware of this but the front defroster uses the AC compressor to defrost the windshield.

does anyone put rain-x inside the windshield to reduce the need for front defrost?
i pretty much run defrost + low vent on all the time from oct-mar

I thought these 2nd gen V6 RDX's were supposed to be a lot more fuel efficient than the 1st gen turbo 4's. Looking at these numbers, I guess not...

also note colder weather means less mileage for the reasons you've listed (defrosting + longer o2 sensor heating times) but also because many fuel stations need to switch to a winter blend which always results in less fuel economy.

the biggest factor is your driving habits/routes imo.

ps I would also start with the air filter as part of maintenance but I dont believe there is anything wrong with your vehicle

The v6 Rdx is much much much more fuel efficient than the turbo 1g.

However VCM seldom kicks in when driving in city.


Here are my 2017 Rdx numbers from last fill of 91 octane

Total km on last tank was 495 km.

60 %Hwy , 20% stop n go traffic , 20% city

When I'm driving the family 1st gen RDX, I typically get anywhere between 10 - 12L per 100km. But when the wifey drives it, it's usually in the 14's or more. FailFish

Keep in mind he's doing 90% city driving, that makes a huge diff. I suspect with 50/50 combined driving the RDX would average ~11L/100km depending on the driver and conditions?? Certainly highway only you'd be well below 10L/100km...

(Case in point: my M4 gets under 9L/100km on the highway. :rofl:)

Do you just go to the dealer and ask for a check up? What's the cost of this? Since I reset my oil indicator myself each time i change oil it won't show the scheduled maintenance stuff... so what do I say?

"Hi, my RDX is under warranty and I'm concerned there may be a mechanical problem that's resulting in poor gas mileage. Can you please take a look?"
