Gaming Laptop

Trying to hunt a gaming laptop for my little brother.
Want it semi portable he already has a gaming computer at home.

Was looking at Razer but its only 14"

Always liked Asus gaming products and I found these 2, main difference is the 1060 vs 1070

Asus ROG STRIX GL502VS-DB71 w/ Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB, 256GB SSD + 1TB, 15.6in FHD + G-Sync, GTX 1070, Win 10 at Memory Express
Asus ROG STRIX GL502VM-DB74 w/ Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB, 256GB + 1TB, 15.6in FHD G-Sync, GTX 1060, Win 10 at Memory Express

Anyone else have any recommendations?

[Dell] Alienware 15 R3 GTX 1070 $1799 - RedFlagDeals.com Forums

I'd probably get an Alienware 15" if I was looking at a higher end gaming laptop. Lots of good deals right now with EPP coupons and other coupons.

Guy on the first page got it down to like $1590 before taxes. That's like $600 cheaper than any other GTX 1070 laptop.

If he has a gaming desktop and doesn't mind something more basic, see if a GTX 960M laptop will work out for him. They go for like $1000 now.

I can't say anything good about Alienware laptops.

My brother and I both have M17x from a few years ago, and a bunch of my students bought Alienware laptops (different models etc) after seeing mine. Against my warning.

Long story short, every single one of us have had problems (of varying degrees) with our laptops.

Dell DOES respond decently when you put in a claim on an issue, but the fact that 5/5 Alienware laptops all have had problems scares me.

I tell all my students not to buy them because it is overpriced, big and heavy, and has tons of problems. There is literally no reason to pick Alienware over another gaming laptop with similar specs.

EDIT: might as well share some of the issues:
Spoiler!

would advise against buying the dell alienware laptops.
have a friend that had to return his 3 times because of overheating issues. and it still has the issue. currently going through another return process, not to mention dell won't extend his warranty on the new unit he is getting.
the laptop has been back at dell longer than he has owned it.

Alienware is way to bulky for his needs.

If I am getting him a new laptop I want it to be 1060 or 1070 at least.

As you mentioned in your first post, you were looking into Razer.

They actually do have a 17.3 inch model coming out... if you're referring to the newest models.

"The NEW Razer Blade Pro"
The New Razer Blade Pro - The Desktop in Your Laptop

GTX1080

I couldn't find the price the last time I looked (assuming it's not being sold yet). But from the American website + our bad conversion rates, it was nearing 4000 bucks lol

17" is a bit to big for portability.
I think the PRO is going to be going for 4k CAD at least.

The stealth is 14" around 3k CAD

To OP, I agree with the other members with regards to the Alienware gaming laptops, do not buy them. I've seen numerous day-old alienwares returned due to malfunctioning SSDs, how and why is beyond me. I've also seen plenty that got returned because it keeps booting into the BIOS repeatedly.

I would recommend buying the ASUS ROGs, but they are not without faults too. Though, in comparison to the Alienware, it has less problems and manufacturer defects.

ScizzMoney 11-27-2016 11:13 AM

I'd go with the one that has a 1070m. From what I've read it's about a 15-20% increase in graphic performance over the 1060m.

I've loved my Alienware laptop. EVERYTHING that sells well will have numerous amounts that have problems, I have had no issues with mine and 3 of my friends that own them haven't had problems either. I've used mine as a daily gaming rig / desktop replacement and took it to camp with me (work camp, oil sands site) every week.

My brother has an Asus gaming laptop and he has had no issues with it, he said he'd buy one again when he needs to update.

You really can't go wrong with whatever you pick, as they all have fairly premium components inside them. My biggest advice is to not use them as "laptops" as they all run warm. Keep them on flat surfaces that allow them to breathe.

try the Dell XPS 15 9550 with i7 and 4k display. You get an amazing 4k monitor, it's smoking fast and it is extremely lightweight.

The RBS is awesome. I'm able to run Overwatch on medium which is good enough for me. Best bang for your buck ultrabook i7 IMO.
