Friends are forever

After such a happy Christmas season with my family, today I knew I needed to take my dog into see the vet - things for her were really different. I have had this girl since she was a pup, 14 years ago, and she has turned into one of the kindest and loving dogs anyone could ask for; mothers often bring their children over to meet our Stella Blue if their children are afraid of dogs, knowing that she will only give them love back.

Well, with a variety of issues and due to her old age, the vet simply said that there is nothing much left to do and that our time together is almost at an end; she is in pain and may have two months left but that it would be best to 'do the right thing' prior. He has been Stella's vet for over ten years and he even had a few tears with me.

I discussed that I want to bring her home, spend some time with our family, but that I will return next week and we shall walk together one last time. My boys, as you can imagine, are upset - though it comes and goes in waves. I look back on all the pictures I have of Stella, and she is always next to our eldest son - she was literally her second mom - always on the look-out for danger and protecting her any way she could. Stella still sleeps right outside his door every night, keeping watch.

It just helps to cope with the emotions when I type, and I hope you don;t mind my sharing.

When it comes to friendships, I don't believe in good-byes; I prefer 'until we meet again'.

I'm so sorry Zedbra, she's beautiful. She looks like she lived a long happy life with you. Many hugs for you and your family.

I'm sorry Zedbra. Was your other pup Maddie(?) that you adopted? I remember you lost her somewhat recently. These pups are lucky to have a family that cares about them so much. I hope you take a lot of pride in that. Its apparent every time I read you talk about any of them.

Thanks everyone.

We adopted Maddie through stewie here on Revscene; she was already an old girl when we adopted her so we knew what we were getting into. We gave her a good home to live out her golden years. She's in the background in one of the pictures above.

I guess you always know that like all life, we are born into death; it is just so hard to have to be the one to decide the day you are going to 'chose' their death date when it is someone or something like a dog that you love and they love you back.

Same boat as you bro. Inlaws put their dog down Boxing day. 14 year old Shepard. Never easy saying goodbye to a family member.

Berz out.

I cannot have a dog because I cannot hold back tears when they go. This is so heart wrenching. My deepest condolences

Berz hold me, I am weak at the knees.

I have always had a dog and I've thought about this as well. However, I've always come to the conclusion that if you don't just for the sake of saving yourself from heartache, you're really missing out of one of life's most rewarding pleasures.

I had my final walk with our beloved Miss Stella Blue today. She is now forever chasing her tail in the clouds.

Our boys had time to say their good-byes and we know she is no longer in pain, though she didn't want to ever show it anyways.

Thank you all for your kind words.

I'm sorry for your loss, just went through this during the summer. As you know from having dogs in the past it gets easier to deal with as time passes, never forget.

Damn you. :QQ:

I'm sitting here right now surrounded by six of the seven dogs in the house (including two fosters). Dogs are amazing.

Man I still have a few years to go before my dog will get there, he's 9 now, but I can't imagine the inevitable day that will come... awe man.

Sorry for your loss, may she live on peacefully in heaven.
