YT Video shows Vancouver man living in a U-Haul storage locker, gets evicted

Quote:
A video posted on YouTube by a Vancouver man who says he lived in a U-Haul storage locker for two months shows how far people will go to avoid paying the city's sky-high rents, but the company has a warning for anyone thinking of copying the move.

"U-Haul has procedures in place to detect anyone attempting to break the law and live in a storage locker/unit," company spokesman Jeff Lockridge told CBC News.

In the video, the man identified only as 007craft gives a guided tour of his tiny home inside the 10x10-foot storage locker at a U-Haul facility in South Vancouver.

His amenities included a double bed, big screen TV, love seat, hot plate, and toaster oven. He also shows how he ran power to the unit from a nearby plug and picked up phone service with an extra antenna. He also rigged up running water.

In a matching post on the social media site Reddit, the man details how he made the small space livable — at a cost of about $100 for hardware. The cost of renting the locker was $205 a month, including insurance.

"Staff knew about my power and charged me $5 a month for it.... so I didn't need to keep unplugging the power," he said.

He used the washroom in the building and showered at a local gym and claims staff at the facility let him live there as long as he kept a low profile.

"I had 24-hour access, I was allowed to be there at any time for as long as I wanted. The only rule I broke was sleeping there," he said.

Evicted in November, U-Haul says

U-haul has a slightly different version of events, saying the man's locker lifestyle was illegal and once detected he was evicted long before he posted the YouTube video this week.

"Though the video insinuates he got away with doing this, this individual was caught and immediately evicted from the facility in November, two months before the video was posted," said U-Haul spokesman Lockridge.

"Local management didn't seek police involvement and was simply more interested in having the individual out and the illegal behavior ceased," he said.

At the end of the video, the man tells viewers he since moved into a small apartment, which he said he plans to convert into a climbing gym.

In another video, he reveals how he previously put a double bed and foldout kitchen with running water inside a Honda Civic for living on the road.

CBC News attempted to contact the man, but he did not respond.

I used to run a moving company and having "man caves" or get away places is common. People put a chair or bookshelf and just go have a quiet place they can relax. Legally it states no one may live in a locker. You can use them for other things. Some of the bigger ones I've seen turned into small work shops as well.

Berz out.

007craft lived a lavish life of luxury—in a U-Haul storage unit. The key, he says, is being a ghost: do nothing that could get you noticed
I had just came back from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and found myself homeless. I had given up my apartment to go hike and now that I was back I wanted to turn my car into a livable space. I eventually did that ... but found I still needed access to lots of stuff from my storage unit which was 6x4x10 and everything was just jammed in there. I figured there had to be a better way. I scoped out a 10x10x6 unit and moved all my stuff inside. Still super small, I managed to build shelves and organize it in a way where everything is accessible. But why stop there! I decided to build shelves and a water system and setup my actual apartment so I could live there. I was moving in! I ended up living in the unit for around 2 months. I only spent around $100 making the space as efficient as I did, mostly because I already owned so much hardware. The cost of rent on my unit was $205 a month (which included insurance). A bargain, considering an apartment in the area was $1000+ a month. I made this video showcasing my work/unit.
The power extension cable seems awfully obvious to me, too, but I guess if they're not looking for it, they won't see it.

It's interesting how eager commentators are to turn him in, and to boast about having turned him in. Ten years ago, he'd have received intrigued praise for messing with the system. Five years ago, he'd have been buried in handwringing concern talk from net-nannies. Now people compete to be the first the inform the proper authorities. In truth there's a fair mix of all the above, but the trend toward the latter is very 2017.
Where do you shower?
At the gym or community center. I workout every day so Im always clean. I did have plans to build a popup shower that attached to the bathroom sink with a hose (Hot water) and trickle down through a popup stall. This would have worked because the bathroom was large and had a floor drain. Ultimately I did not stay long enough to actually make it.

He had poor op-sec. He brought attention to himself, and he had easily identifiable/traceable info (serial/barcode on door) in his fucking video.

I love how he tells viewers that he has to be as inconspicuous as possible and that he's homeless but goes on to show everyone his new 4K tv and speakers

In a world of Shared living spaces and small apartments, I'm sure having a small space where you can go and relax that you can make all your own isn't really a bad thing. Some storage lockers are bigger than peoples bedrooms.

Reminds me of the setup from the movie "The Accountant". Dude had an airstream in a storage unit and used it as his hideout for all his fancy things and guns etc.
