Buying a MazdaSpeed(6) - Help Hey guys, I'm looking into the MazdaSpeed6, found one for a pretty low price. I know about the infamous VVT issue and the motor mounts / diff mounts. Are there any other issues I should look at? Thanks! Edit: No longer seems like a feasible option. See thread for details. |
Rear diff and diff mounts. It's one of the weaker points of the car. I'm not sure how to check if the diff is still good, but you can definitely see if the diff mounts are still good. |

At that price, as long as it drives fine and has some maintainance history, snatch that shit up. It's cheap enough to easily afford any motor mounts or extra maintainance in the future |

Notes: - minor cosmetic: rock chip damage on front end and hood - cold start is noisy (can indicate vvt issue, engine/turbo blow up) - Car was serviced about 2 weeks ago - clutch was done 6 years ago - 2nd owner since 2010, no accidents (as far as owner is aware) - VIN comes back clean - Motor was rebuilt two years ago by NT Machine Shop in Langley (anyone heard of this?) - no longer has receipt for rebuild work - "Rebuilt crankshaft and 1 piston, the motor hydraulic locked a piston. Cause of issue was fixed" - Car sat for some time before all motor work was completed due to financial issue - owner has receipts for: piston, power steering pump, all clutch assembly - is not currently insured |

Can he tell you what exactly went wrong with the motor? Maybe I can help you shed some light into whether if it's worth you taking a plunge on it. |
Speed6's also have a problem with a cracked clutch pedal. You either have to replace the pedal assembly or get someone to weld it. Important! Check your clutch pedal!!! - Mazdaspeed Forums Also, some K04 turbos found in the speeds have issues with smoking at idle. Some say it's bad turbo seals, some say it's due to poor pcv design. I never had any smoking with mine, but I replaced it with a BNR S3 turbo anyways. Also, most products from SURE are garbage, especially their mounts. Stay away. The VVT fix is like 1.4-2k from the dealership. Do a compression test as well. |

Are there any MazdaSpeed specialist shops I should go to for a PPI? |
VVT tensioner/timing chain rattle Note that it gets really loud and then quiets down. The timing chain is hitting the valve cover at startup due to the slack. If you check out this car, insist that you see it after it has sat overnight and check to ensure the engine is cold before starting up. Get the guy to start it up while you listen under the hood. If you need a VVT job, I'd probably just go to the dealership, since hopefully they've done some before and know what they're doing. I would rather buy a car that has been well taken care of than one that has questionable history. Turbo, AWD, questionable rebuilt motor, ?confirmed VVT rattle....that all adds up to $$$$$ if things go wrong. I don't think there are many shops that specialize in the MZR, there just not enough demand. Any decent shop should be able to do a regular PPI, make sure it includes a compression test. |
Update: I dont think I'm going to buy. I emailed Eunos Custom Automotive, a local Mazda specialist. Chris got back to me with strong warnings. I think my final decision on if it's worth checking out will be when Stratified Automotive gets back to me. Thanks for the help everyone! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...41ca54999c.jpg Sent from my BlackBerry PRIV using Tapatalk |
Man, for a "Mazda" guy he seems pretty harsh. I don't know about speed 6's, but my Speed 3 has crossed 9 years old and my only real problem I've experienced to date since new was a bad clutch slave cylinder about 2 years ago. I'm still on my original clutch and brakes! |

I had my Speed6 from 2010-2015 and 55k to 115k. It was a pretty good car all in all. Yes, it had the VVT issue (fixed under warranty). I upgraded the diff mount, and still busted an axle during an aggressive u-turn, shit happens. One thing that I knew was coming, but I didn't do was cleaning of the valves because of the direct injection, so that is something to consider. Also, see if the clutch has been replaced, I hear it's a huge bitch of a job. |
I think a big factor is just how much the cars were beat on by their previous owners. At it's time it was one of the fastest econoboxes you could buy. A lot of people drove the piss out of them and then just dumped them when they had enough. |
