| Dropped my external HD
so I accidentally dropped my External HD. When I plug it onto my PC, it turns on but the computer did not get any signal from the HD.
my external HD now makes a continuous buzzing sound, any idea what it is?
anyone know of any place where I can get it fixed or have all the files transferred out?
thanks!

RIP.
The drive is probably toast, and unless the documents on it are very important, it's not going to be worth shelling out the $$$ for someone to take a look at it.
Try shoving it into the freezer for a few hours.

that happened to my previous hard drive. I had important files in it and i also had that weird buzzing sound when i put my ears against of it. you should consider getting a new hard drive.

I'd try swapping the actual drive into a different case, but it may well be toast.

open your drive in a certified clean room and check inside. It’s important to confirm the condition of the internal moving parts, before turning it on to check if it still works.
If this happened to your drive, and you turn it on, those arms will drag the bent metal across the platters scratching them. This will cause your data to be unrecoverable.
The more we know.

I have the WD clam shell case. pretty easy to pry open.
opened the HD and found nothing suspicious. the head looks like its stuck so I gently pulled it back to its original position with a hook, put it back together and somehow it worked...for 3 mins then it died again.
unplugged it and plug it back on and it dies again in few mins. after several attempts I managed to pull out all the files but the HD itself is fried.
lesson learned, next time I'm putting a sleeve on it.
Thanks for the imput everyone!
and NO, I don't have porn in this HD, its in my other HD.

The more we know. | Side question, if you had two identical drives, and for whatever reason one stopped working. Could you swap over the platters of the non-working one over to the other drive and will it read the info? Given it was done in a clean environment, exact same order and and orientation of the platters etc.
