DIY 4770k IHS removal My 4770k never gets pass 4.3ghz. Even with water cooling, it hits the thermal throttling temp everytime I play games or use Prime 95. so I followed the tutorial online and bought all the parts I need to removal the IHS. https://picoolio.net/images/2017/03/...639413d1f3.jpg Pretty damn easy if you have the proper tools, I spent about $25 for all the tools I need. If you had a slab of diamond, it's 5 times better heat transfer than aluminium. :lol I remember the days of lapping a heatsink to get better heat transfers. Those days were fun. You could also try polishing both sides of your IHS. |
The 4770K had such shit paste that Intel actually did something about it :lol |
A minus of 10C is pretty good with a simple DIY. Maybe I'll try this on my 6950X when I feel gutsy enough... Overclocked to 4.0Ghz. On water cooling, it's running at 28C idle and 45C on load. I was blown away... I guess I could push the clock speed up some more as I have so much temperature headroom. |
what sort of performance gain are you looking to get from this? I used to OC my 2700k for fun, but random instability like bsod once a year turned me off from running close to max 4.8, and now im down to about 4.4. |
For some reason I never thought about that piece as being removable. Do people make heatsinks that mount directly to the chip so you can remove this piece in between? |

i'm getting too old to bother tweaking for more serious overclocking also, slightly different pressure delidding and your chip is done...and you can't replace it because it's EoL meaning your mobo is useless unless you buy the same chip used. |
