Tips on buying used vehicles? okay so my FRS is a total loss from ICBC and they gave me 22k for 2014 model which is really fair... givin it has like almost 60k clicks. I was thinking of a nissan rogue and going for a compact SUV i am looking at the prices on autotrader which is high and craigslist which is obviously low. 20k with 16k clicks for a 2016 model? surely there has to be some accident or something wrong with it right? and 16k km only hmmm.... what are the steps to buying used vehicles ? I don't want to get trapped not knowing what will happen since I have zero experience with used cars. |
Carproof and do a pre-purchase inspection. Be careful and listen for funny noises or weird things that don't seem right to you. Also, have you looked at Repo.com? Some interesting low-KM SUVs there. 2017 Santa Fe Sport SE 2.4L AWD 2016 Hyundai Tucson GLS Premium SE w/Preferred Package AWD |

Get carproof with the ICBC info. Make sure it contains ICBC info (costs about $10 more). Buy your own carproof and use the seller's carproof only as a reference. I've heard a story where a buyer used the seller's carproof which did not contain ICBC info. The car turned out to have over $35k damage from vandalism, likely getting keyed. Also, try to get a vehicle that's still on warranty, really provides assurance. Ask the seller where they service the vehicle and access their service records to know if there are any issues. For example, if the seller brought it in for service and noted the rear window has issues in the service report, you can bring that up and lower the price of the vehicle. |
really great info that I can not google from you guys and I am going to give a fail button to donk. here |
Personally I inspect the car in person and take it for a test drive. Learn more about the seller and why they are selling. I take a picture of the VIN # and run the free report through ICBC that tells you if it is a clean title or not. https://onlinebusiness.icbc.com/vdwq.../WelcomeAction If I am serious about the car and we have negotiated a price I may have an inspection done and purchase the ICBC + Carproof reports. go see thumper and buy him a beer If you're serious about a car, get a 3rd party pre-purchase inspection. BCAA does on site inspection or check on CL for someone who can do it. |
^ Wrench Patrol does an on-site PPI. |

tofu has all brands and types of preowned vehicles at his dealership, but he won't sell you anything just for the sale and only picks out the good ones in stock. i think this hurts his monthly quota, but he still makes it work... it just goes to say how honest he is at what he does, so just go see him and take the worry out of replacing your car. |

Always factor a couple of CarProofs and inspections into your budget, spending an extra couple hundred ruling out cars is worth it overall. |
Consumer Reports and Lemon-Aid both have good used car buying guides and lots of other useful information. Consumer Reports online is pretty cheap if you only need to use it short term at US$7 for 1 month (cancel the auto-renew so they don't keep charging you). Lemon-Aid has more detailed information and more Canadian-specific content that CR doesn't offer, but the book will run you around $35 IIRC. |
nice fresh topic! never been discussed before, not even in here RS Tech Article: Buying a Used Vehicle - REVscene Automotive Forum |
Thats a low price and I would suspect its a ex rental vehicle, you would be surprised how many 1-2 yrs old vehicles with less than 40k km are actually old rental cars. Ask dealership the history and they would likely tell you. And like most people have said get a private inspection done for your peace of mind. That being said I personally find the rogue to be a underpowered pile because of the cvt transmission. If I were you I would look into a rav 4 or sante fe etc, there many choices in small/medium crossovers. |
id have to agree with vantrip. the rouge isn't the best compact suv on the market. i've used to drive my coworker's all the time. a bunch of cool tech features, an extra 3 seats in the back. i'd recommend a rav4 |
I believe the registration or ICBC records would show it has been used as a rental |
