Langley gas wars? Gas at $1.05!

Gas war? Langley Esso stations drop prices to $1.05

Two Esso stations in Langley appear to be flush with gas, dropping the price to 105.9 cents per litre.

According to Gas Buddy Vancouver, that’s 14 cents cheaper than the next-closest pump in Metro Vancouver — the one at the Langley Costco — and 35 cents cheaper than the City of Vancouver’s average.

Cheap gas doesn’t go unnoticed anywhere, let alone in commuter-heavy Langley. Shortly after the Essos, at 6036 Glover Rd and 21612 Fraser Highway, started doing their own thing, word began to spread.

By mid-afternoon, a line-up had formed at the Fraser Highway location, causing delays and blocking the rightmost eastbound lane, and based on this tweet from Vancouver’s Kevin Adhika, the Glover Road station is a crowded spot as well.

It only makes sense: gasoline prices have been draining wallets in the Lower Mainland, climbing to historic highs a month ago due to a short supply. In early April, prices were as high as 142.9 cents at dozens of gas stations from Vancouver to Surrey, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. That’s not far from Vancouver’s gas record: in 2013, gasoline spiked to over 150 cents.

While an employee at the Fraser Highway Esso who declined to give his name said the surprisingly low rates were determined by a standard price survey, done three times a day, it’s clear that these two stations are outliers, and now they may even be on the verge of creating a gas war in the area.

According to one commuter, the Chevron across the street from the Fraser Highway Esso briefly joined the fray.

A Super Save Gas at 20966 56 Ave, directly between the two Esso stations, matched the price in the late afternoon.

An employee who answered the phone at the station said they received a call from their head office telling them to drop its price to 105.9 cents in response.

Great to hear, we need it done more often!

hchang 05-24-2017 07:22 PM

Just a heads up if anybody's planning to drive out there, it's not 105.9 anymore

Urrtoast 05-24-2017 08:10 PM

Almost not worth the Drive if you have to cross the toll bridge both ways on top of the 1 hr drive plus. :heckno:
If your out there already its a good deal.

is it still worth to gas up in blaine even with our craptastic rates?

Inaii 05-24-2017 09:03 PM

Only time I get gas down there is when I'm already going down (brother has a package to pick up or we're getting something that's only sold down there).

I just go to abbotsford. It's the same price after conversion. Filled up on Sat. The price was 118.9

Sumas is still around 1.05/L for regular and 1.10/L for premium, after the exchange..

originalhypa 05-25-2017 09:38 AM

That particular station is always a little cheaper than the rest, usually about a nickel.
Their Tim Hortons sucks though.....

Last time I went to the states I filled my tank up for $55 USD. That was at $3.19 a gallon. Converted to litres it comes out to 70 litres. My credit card was charged $83.33 CAD. So my calculation came out to be $1.19 a litre which is what I paid for in Abbotsford (118.9). How much was it per gallon at Sumas? I just went to the Chevron right after the truck crossing.

cdizzle_996 05-26-2017 02:45 AM

Fuel in Sumas varies from 2.79-2.99/Gallon. So roughly .73c/litre USD.

I put 84L/22gal in my truck today and it cost me $85.50cdn according to my online banking.

When gas is cheaper at a different location, it's almost always never worth the drive unless you're bringing in jerry cans.

go to the peach arch crossing and take the exit immediately after the crossing. you'll go around the round-about onto H street and you will see the shell and texaco. go to texaco, its usually cheaper and its the same gas as chevron.

If gas is $3.19 a US gallon, its 104.9/liter

There's a Mobil, Exxon and Texaco right after the truck crossing border that has gas for $2.79. Just went there today to fill up and will be doing so going forward since it's closer for me than Sumas. Filled up 71.66 litres. It's showing up as $71.66 CAD on my credit card so that's awesome. Stupid me was going to the Chevron and paying $3.19 a gallon the last few times I went to fill up :lol

in my opinion, it's not even worth the time to seek out cheaper gas unless you're on the way already.

I just fill up when i'm near empty.
