SRS light in 99 Civic SiR - does it always mean replace the SRS reel? So, the horn and cruise controls in my em1 stopped working for some months before I stopped driving the car around a year ago. I recently went to a scrap yard and found a Civic Si (Canadian) SRS reel and installed it in my car. The SRS light went away, but the horn and cruise control still didn't work. Also, even though my original clockspring causes the SRS light to show up, if I press the horn butting, the horn relay makes a clicking noise, indicating to me that signal is making it from the clockspring to the relay. But with the replacement reel, even though it doesn't cause the SRS light to turn on, when I press the horn, there is no clicking sound from the horn relay. The D-branded SRS reel from the Canadian Si also has a smaller turning range than the JD-branded SiR reel that was originally in my car. I'm thinking of next buying a used clockspring that specifically came off an SiR / USA Si, and hoping for the best. But are there other avenues of troubleshooting you'd consider exploring before doing that? Also, I opened up and inspected my original SRS reel, and put it back together. It visually appears all good to me, since I didn't notice any sign of breakage anywhere. |
Have you tried resetting the light? After any work on srs system you need to reset the light. How-To: Reset your SRS light | ClubCivic.com - Your Online Civic Community |
I don't that I'd need to do that because the car has sat with the battery disconnected for a long time. AFAIK, that should reset all the dashboard lights. |
I just took the car for a drive along my street with the original clockspring installed, and found that cruise control does actually work. So, CC works, and the horn relay triggers when I press the steering wheel's horn buttons, but the horn doesn't sound, and the SRS light is turned on. So, maybe there's a problem with the horn's connection. And I'm guessing then that the SRS light generally indicates a problem with the involved systems, and not necessarily a problem with the SRS reel. I'm still not certain the horn's the actual issue, but it'll be the next part that I'll check out. |
Can I safely test the horn by disconnecting it from its wiring, and touching a gator clip that's attached to the battery to one of the two terminals, or both, that are inside of the horn's connector? http://i.imgur.com/miLqacj.gif |

If you can hear the horn relay clicking, sounds like the cable reel is working |

You can also get your srs code through a quick bypass.. All you need is wire or paper clip..... I find 2 long wires is great that way you can sit in the driver seat and look at the blink codes on your dash. https://hondakarma.com/threads/how-t...89/live?page=1 Hopes this helps |

However, my EM1's horn has only one terminal. https://i.imgur.com/5qWJfK4.jpg (BTW, I don't know if it's just because I took it, but I think that picture looks very photogenic) Should I just do horn to battery +, and have no ground connection? BTW, what is the ground connection supposed to do? |
The bolt you removed is the ground. Yes you will need a ground to test it |
