When plus-sized model and positive body influencer Natalie Hage took a plane from Dallas to L.A. last week, it was supposed to be just another flight to a modelling gig.
Instead, the model found that she had become the target of body shaming when she witnessed her seatmate texting hurtful comments about her weight to a friend of his.
But rather than stay silent, the 30-year-old had a plan: she would take photos of his text messages with her phone and then confront the man (whose name is Eric) with her evidence, all while getting the interaction on video.
And that’s exactly what she did.
“I’m shaking right now,” Hage wrote on her Instagram account. “As soon as I sat down, the gentleman on my left began loudly huffing, sighing and readjusting himself in his seat. I see him furiously texting and then purposefully turning the phone away from me. So, naturally, next time he texts, I take a look. The texts were about me and I’m almost positive he took photos of me. Not only were they texts about me, but they were really mean and ugly, with even the recipient named ‘Linda’ chiming back with shaming retorts.”
“Hopefully she didn’t have any Mexican food,” the recipient on the other end of the text messages wrote.
“I think she ate a Mexican,” the man wrote back. “If the news reports a DFW Airbus A321 leaving the runways without rotating, that would be my flight.”
“He then proceeded to say he’s leaving a neck mark on the window because he’s so smashed against the wall,” Hage said. “From the photos, you can see I’m not in his space.”
According to Hage, there were several more texts commenting on her weight between the man and the recipient of the text messages.
And when Hage tried to ask the other man to her right to switch seats with her because of what the man was saying, Hage said the man laughed and refused.
But Hage didn’t cower at the situation. After thinking about the type of message she would be sending by not speaking up for herself, she decided to take action.

I've noticed that woman who are "plus sized" and love their body's always wear clothes that go over their belly button like in the photo in the article. Is this because they don't want to have their gut hanging out? Thought they wouldn't mind because they say their bodies are healthy.

I always get a kick out of the FB posts stating "Real women have curves!" accompanied by the most "ideal" overweight person: attractive (could be a model if skinny), good skin (no cottage cheese), with big tits and ass that aren't dwarfed by an even bigger belly. But they don't look anything like that.

I know a few gals who are really pretty, but also about 250-350 lbs.
Shit man, it's not even about attraction. I'm about 10 lbs over my best weight right now and I feel it. Let alone if I was 100 lbs over that weight.
By creating this idea of loving the skin you're in, you're giving the individual a reason (or excuse?) not to make a positive body change, and that's a shame.

Sometimes being a plus size person, man or woman, is an advantage while boarding a flight. No security guard is gonna drag and drop that much mass.

Chubby is one thing but when your legs start to look like century old tree trunks, I think there's a problem.

If somebody took a covert photo of my phone where I was having a private conversation, I would be pretty fucking pissed that they violated my privacy.
Yeah he was being an asshole, but he was doing it privately with a friend. I really don't see anything wrong with what he was doing. Really if Snoopy-McFatcunt had just minded her own business, she wouldn't have gotten butt hurt over it, and everybody would have had a pleasant flight.
If anything, this should be a lesson to her that two wrongs don't make a right. Not some sort of fat person empowerment.

If you are going to tell yourself you are beautiful no matter what, and ignore the very real health risks associated with obesity, then it is probably best you mind your own business and keep your eyes off a stranger's phone screen.
