Mazda Kai Concept

If Only All Hatchbacks Were As Stunning As The Mazda Kai Concept

Quote:

Mazda just can't stop building great-looking concepts, and while the cab-rearward, coupe-like Kai Concept isn't likely to be practical enough for production, we wish they'd make it anyway...

As concept cars at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show go, Mazda has two of this year’s best. On top of the stunning Vision Coupe we brought to you earlier, there’s this: the awesome little Kai Concept.

According to Mazda, the Kai Concept “embodies the technology, engineering and styling concepts that will define the coming generation of Mazdas.” If that’s the case, bring it on and spread it all over us like Nutella on toast.

A cab-rearward coupe-like silhouette with a long bonnet is unusual for the small hatchback class, giving it a look closer to the likes of the Toyota GT86 rather than your typical, common-or-garden hatchback.

Improvements have been made in “all areas of dynamic performance,” Mazda says, making it quieter, more comfortable and faster than existing models. Better cancel that Mazda3 order if this is its replacement…

Sadly, Mazda hasn’t released much information about the fetching new concept. We know it’s still front-wheel drive, but the engines and drivetrains are a mystery.

Early reports suggest that it will use developments of the existing SkyActiv power units. The petrol SkyActiv-G engines will produce 10-30 per cent more torque than the existing ones while being 20-30 per cent more efficient.

The suggestion is potentially diesel-rivalling fuel economy with much quieter operation, smoother manners, faster warm-up and no need for a troublesome particulate filter. They won’t be high-revving, but they will be the solution the markets – and the law – dictate.

As long as it looks like this, we’re happy!

Looks sleek. Although concept always looks way better than production.

It looks like someone just slapped that hideous Mazda front end on an Alfa.

I see the 4th gen prelude interior is finally making a comeback. I guess it was 30 years ahead of its time.

I was listening to a podcast where they interviewed one of the Mazda USA guys who said the mazdaspeed department is not coming back but they may have more "spirited" + "exclusive" editions. I hope the new SC/Turbo'd CX9 engine ends up in this new generation hatch
