Working with Bricks & Mortar...

anyone got any simple ways to apply mortar to the brick layout I did (see pic). Basically i want it so the bricks cant be moved and i figure mortar would be most effective at somewhat 'gluing' them together sideways.

my question is...rather than prep the mortar in a bucket with water...can i just pour it between the bricks and THEN add water via a light sprinkling? but enough to get it wet and activate its stickiness???

as per this random comment i found via google:
Open mortar mix (no aggregate, just sand and cement), spread it dry over the area and brush until the gaps are filled. Spray with a fine mist until it is saturated, but not sloppy. Let that dry and you are done.

thanks.
