Pre owned subaru sti damage claim question
 

There is a 8,700 dollar claim on the front left corner and carproof doesn't give detail on the specific damage. I personally think it seems to be pretty high for just body damage. The salesman states it's high because of oem Japanese parts and having to import them in. Car is priced decent but worried about the high claim. Revscene thoughts if I should worry about the claim?

Yeah I wouldn't touch that car but the sales guy could be telling the truth with the OEM parts tho. I personally would just buy a new one even tho it is priced decent I guess. If you added the 8,700 dollar claim to the selling price that's practically a new sti....

^ what do you think a good offer would be in your opinion for the car. I might even consider paying to get it inspected if I am really serious about it. That should ease my mind.

a brand new STi is about 42k. go price a new one and check what finance rate you'll be given. often they will give way lower interest rates on a brand new car through subaru finance (or whoever they use) compared to the used car. so over the course of financing the STi for 5-7 years or whatever your terms might be, it could be the same cost to just buy a new car with lower interest vs a used car (with a big corner hit) with a higher interest

edit: and on a personal note, to me the whole point of buying a new car is, well, getting a new car! not one that has already had accidents. you dont know how well painted surfaces were prepped, how much bondo was used, what parts were replaced or just straightened etc etc. paying almost 40k for a car id want to know it will be good for the next 20 years

I was planning to buy the car outright. My budget is 40k after tax and obviously less if possible.

If you are asking these questions now, someone down the road when you sell it will ask the same questions. Unless there are repair receipts and service history, I would walk, or negotiate a reasonable cost for the car, especially if you are buying in cash.

yeah buying the car now with a claim of $8700 and you buying the car at $36k say if you want to sell it on later well guess what you will be pretty much keeping the car since no one will want to touch it.

If you are going to pay $40k outright for the car why wouldn't you just finance the rest of it? I mean you will get a brand new car with no claims and no problems...

You can request an ICBC claims report. They take 48 hours to show up. It will tell you exactly what was replaced, each and every piece. $8700 on a front end likely is only cosmetic. If the frame was involved that would easily be 5 digit territory. I wouldn't be very concerned at all as long as the repair is clean.

^ I guess I'm a person who doesn't want to do monthly payments. I'm just don't know if 8700 is just body work and internal damage.

from bodyshop order experience sounds like cosmetic and superfical stuff.

Bumper - 1.3k probably at most not including paint.
PD sensors and other crap couple 100s
fender more than likely 700 + paint
Grille 600?
good chance of a hood.

5-10k sounds like a pretty average fender-bender claim on it

that isn't much of a deal, you can either get a new one for a little bit more, or i'd suggest a lower km/no accident one.

this is the classic problem with claim value. worthless value and has no comparison value. Ask what was fixed and go from there if you want to be informed. But if selling the car is gonna be your problem, stay away because 95% of fucktards out there are not going to touch this car with that declaration.

I believe the depreciation on a vehicle with accidents is 50% of the repair cost in comparison to market value.

If the car checks out and you really like it, I would offer ~$4350 less than a reasonable offer on a comparable car with no accidents.

Yeah I'm definitely going to offer a lower price than what he is asking for. I will also request a claims report on the detail of the work. It's just too bad it's the holidays and it takes two business days to get it. The car has also been on the lot since at least September so I bet he's itching to move it out. I'll low ball him on boxing day or I'll just wait the detailed report but that might be until the new year? You think these guys are more desperate to sell at the end of the year vs the beginning?

Sorry also forgot to mention there is another claim of 4700 on the other front side of the vehicle. Which isn't too significant compared to the other claim.

Set a baseline price and stick to it, dont go any higher. Always know that they are definitley more eager to sell than you are to buy, unless its some crazy rare car or a smoking deal. There will always be another

just to give some perspective, I had to get my front bumper/fog light/oem front lip and misc front end fasteners and trim pieces replaced. (no headlight or fender damage)

that claim was under $2000 with paint. The bumper itself was in stock locally and it was only $260 for an OEM one(the lip was more expensive than the bumper!).
