600 or 750

Hey guys,

I'm looking for my next used bike purchase. Been contemplating between a 600 and 750 to stay in the insurance bracket.

For those who've ridden both. Did you notice a major difference between the 600 and 750?
I'm looking at 3 brands in the 600cc range (Honda CBR600RR, Yamaha R6 maybe the S or a Suzuki GSX-R600) or a GSX-R 750 between 05-09. Trying to keep my budget around the $5k mark. Not interested in the Kawi's as I dont like the looks of them.

If you have any advice on years or different models and brands i'm all ears.

600 and 750 meh.. not much difference tbh.

imo, i liked my 09 zx6r more than the k6 gsxr and 08 cbr600rr.

The CBR has the last amount of power of the group (apart from the 03/04 year). The R6 has all of its power on the top end so you'll constantly be revving and down shifting to get moving at a good speed. The Gixxer is the best all rounder in terms of mid-range torque and ergonomics. If you're a shorter fellow, then the CBR might be better suited for you.

I've owned a gixxer 600 and I was very happy with it (until another member here let me try his S1KRR) but I've never tried the 750 before but from what I hear, it should have a good mid-range torque.

FYI, my 08 1000RR is like $20/more then my 06 600RR.. and worth every penny.

My opinion? There's no reason to own a decimal bike. Back in the day 1000's were these mildly more powerful porkers but its not the case anymore. Wayyy more power/torque that's all usable with tons more build quality and better materials and gadgets and brakes and everything you could ever want with a few lbs weight difference. Everytime I ride a 600 it feels like a shitty 1000 with a partially jammed throttle body. There's a reason they're all getting discontinued.

I’ve ridden a 03 gsxr600 when I was younger and it was a great bike super comfy. I’d love to own a S1KRR especially for track use, my buddy let me ride his and I can’t stop thinking about it, it’s really bad. But that’s probably when I can fork out little more cash. I’ll probably pick one up second hand. I don’t really care which 600 sport bike I get as I can adapt, I’m just looking for a cheap fuel injected 600, but since the 750 was in the price range I didn’t want to exclude it. This bike is more or less just something to ride for a few years until I can get that BMW.

Anyone try the R6S would you say that’s the slowest of the group?

Don't buy R6S it's just a leftover parts bike from 2003. Total junk. Best R6 is 08+, which is the same chassis and motor as the 2017+ bikes. For $5kish+ you might be able to snag a deal on one. 06/07 are fine but have a lot less power down low and most people ask way too much for them.

kawi 636 is fairly torqey too, has decent midrange power... but make sure it's '14+

I do like the newer Kawi's but the budget isnt there. I saw a 04 750 on CL for under $4k so i'm temped to hit that up.

A 600 and 1000 are both way too fast for the street. It's just a 1000 will have the torque and mid range so you don't feel like you're ringing out the engine.

That of course is a generalization. A R1 felt slow in the city compared to my CBR600RR. but past 8-9k rpm and it pulls hard.

What kind of riding are you planning to do? mostly commuting, with some weekend spirited riding? track days?

how fit are you? can you go 3 hours on a sport bike without needing a spinal adjustment?

ALWAYS go with the 750.

If you're by yourself, the 600 is fine, when you double and need that extra power that's what the 750 is for. You'll pay more for the 750 cc but when it comes to reselling, the demand is muchhigher.

Its going to be an all around bike. Track and Street, looking to do a few Cali trips this year. I'd say i'm pretty fit, I race a 125 and have done endurance practices with up to 45mins straight of hard racing. So I don't think I'll have any issues with positioning plus I move a lot on the bikes. Rode a Kawi 300 up to osoyoos and back on a day trip + 2hr horseback riding, and I was fine at the end of the day.

I don't really care about being slow in the city. I could care less about being first to the next red light. Its more for the longer trips and such. I use my Grom for city riding which is perfectly fine.

I don't plan on doubling either, my GF has her scooter and we ride the small bikes together.

my 2cents
going from 600 to 750 wasnt a big enough difference for the price, but if you want the most for your insurance money then sure. city riding didnt notice anything, only when rung out can you feel a bit of extra power.

r6 felt the most track focused and least comfy
600rr the most comfy but slowest
gsxr600 best compromise all around in terms of comfort/power band/etc.

if youre coming from 600 and need more i would suggest jump straight to 1000

the bikes you mentioned here are all "sport" positioned, much more upright then the "super sports" that youre considering. make sure to try one out for a long period 30mins+

I'm not technically going from a 600 to 750, I was trying to consider if I should just jump to a 750 since prices for used bikes are the same between the 600 and 750.

Although you're right that the Kawi 300 is more sport positioned that Super Sport, but with the small windshield, I was always experiencing wind turbulence unless I was in full tuck. Which was basically like super sport riding. I personally don't like naked bikes because of wind turbulence, one of the main reasons I sold the supermoto, which I get you can add a windscreen, but I feel like a super sport is more for me.

I've checked out a couple R6's and GSXR's but nothing has really gotten me to want to purchase them. Either owners are asking way to much or they're in pretty crappy condition for the firm prices being posted. I may just wait until the 2019 S1000RR get released and try to work a price on a 2018, or I may just get the 2019. But I get that means I wont have a bike till almost end of season..

if you want aero / hwy, long rides, street fighters are not for you. the wind comes hard at you, you'll be surprised the little windshield makes a hell of a difference.

i'm on my 8th bike; i still found 600RR the worse. 750 was my favorite. I'm done with hwy so street fighter + harley is where I'm enjoying my time.

OH, the ninja 300 is truly an amazing bike on twisties; eg// Horseshoe bay is where the 300 comes powerful, it's literally perfectly fit for those turns due to the engine placement.

Other than that, the MP3 was great too (3 wheel). Tat's another story.

My 2006 gsxr600 killed 3 regulator/rectifiers and 1 stator. I changed both last year and moved the regulator rectifier into the air box. Other then that I like how it rides.

My other buddy with a 2007 gsxr750 also had 2 regulator/rectifiers for on him. They get easy baked oven behind the radiator.

Both had FI check light turn on because of the actuator that controls a valve at the bottom, after the headers, before the exhaust, goes faulty so the light is always on. We both removed ours and pulled the wire and the light is gone.

Owned mine since 2009 and it’s still running. Probably run it until I can’t fix it anymore.

I ended up picking up a brand new 2018 KTM Duke 390, it was more catered to my daily riding needs.

Solid purchase. Was looking at these last time I went to Holeshot, which by the looks of the picture, looks like where you purchased it from. Definitely a great choice to keep insurance prices down. I paid $550 for basic for 6 months and a year thru private insurance for my extras is around $250.

The age old sayin applies, it's funner to drive a slow bike fast, than it is to drive a fast bike slow. I have a 2007 CBR600RR, and man I love it to death, but I sometimes I find myself pulling my girlfriend's bike (2012 Kawasaki Ninja 250R) out and hitting some twisties. Her bike is definitely fun to ride and you can really ring it out (legally speaking) compared to a 600cc super sport.
