Lobster Sticky Rice For Chinese New Year family dinner I'm looking for a place that serves this dish. I've heard many Chinese restaurants started making it but I don't know where exactly. http://ot-foodspotting-production.s3...467?1517135670 The only place I know of is Ho Yuen Kee on Fraser, I've been a couple times before. The last time the manager there snobbed my family really rudely so we aren't really itching to go back. The only other result I found on google was this place called Golden Eats on Kingsway, however the reviews are really bad. Ranging from many complaints of waiting over an hour for food to finding bugs and plastic in the dishes. So I'll pass. There used to be a place in Richmond, it was inside the Richmond Sushi plaza. I think it was called Gold Bohemian or something? But it closed a couple years ago. Any other suggestions? TIA |
There's a place on the Northwest corner of Nanaimo and Broadway. I believe it's called Phoenix Garden. Anyways, it's in a row of restaurants between a greek restaurant and Bon's Off Broadway. They serve that exact dish and I think it's about $40. May I also suggest that you try the Jumbo Prawns in Maggi Sauce and the Fried Fish in Maggi Sauce? Those two plus the lobster dish are the three dishes my family and I always get when we are there. |
Can confirm that the dish at Golden Eats sucks lol It was bland and Chince as fuck with the lobster. Like chince where a lot of the pieces were shitty as pieces with little to no meat. This was like 2 years ago though and 1 experience but needless to say I have not and will not go back. |
I believe Happy Family on Kingsway (between Victoria and Nanaimo) serves this. I haven't tried it but I know family friends who enjoy it. It's not the most glamorous establishment, but the food and service won't wow or disappoint too much. Call in advance to reserve it to be safe. I've only been there once, so take my terrible advice with a grain of salt. |
I have seen they have a Crab and sticky rice at Hou Loks in Richmond, not sure if they have lobster and sticky rice. (Nevermind, just googled them and they closed down) I did find this place https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Locati..._Columbia.html |
Do you absolutely insist on having the sticky rice? Cuz if you don't, nearly every traditional Chinese restaurant can (and will) add a yi mein noodles underlay for you with your lobster dish. |

Happy family does it really well, also the restuarant next to bons to the left of it with the green awning is pretty good. golden eats is a hit and miss from time to time. always different everytime we go. |
dude that looks good, how much do they usually sell for? |
Thanks for the suggestions guys I'll try calling them up! Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they roughly go for $60? But that can change drastically depending on place to place and how much lobster they give you. I've seen as low as $40 and as high as $110! |
Golden Swan on Victoria Dr has it ... 3.5/4 out of 5. https://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/golde...1UFOqh7r2-ilJw Top Ten Lobster Sticky Rice according to YELP 1. Ho Yuen Kee |
Neptune at Hard Rock Casino has it, I thought it was pretty good |
average price is about $65 |

My personal go to is La Amigo in Richmond, they recently opened up a sister restaurant on King Edward and Oak called Mandarin Cafe. It's like a fancier HK style cafe. They have the lobster dish for I think $45? It used to be $36.95 many years back which was a steal... but I guess inflation lol. You can choose 3 ways to cook it, baked with cheese, and another one I can't remember... but ya the Cream sauce with noodle :sweetjesus:. You can add extra noodle for a few bucks and it's good enough for 2-3 people to share. The other dishes are very typical HK cafe like baked pork chop, etc. The prices are a tad higher than average. |
La Amigo, despite the premium price, is a real hidden gem. You won't get Michelin star service and quality, for the $45 for lobster to be shared with two people? How do you go wrong?! And yes, their lobster with "yee meen" is pretty good! You can easily take a girl there for steak and lobster on a budget. :troll: |
I should add, the milk tea and whatnot at La Amigo is pretty good. |
So after calling around I ended up going to Shoom on Fraser for the Lobster Rice, it's a bit smaller than I remember at Ho Yuen Kee but it was tasty, I think it was around $60. The atmosphere of this restaurant is pretty good. It's not fancy like Sun Sui Wah but it ain't ghetto like Happy Family lol. https://s3-media3.fl.yelpcdn.com/bph...TRznmHRw/o.jpg https://s3-media1.fl.yelpcdn.com/bph...OffIgs3g/o.jpg They took us into a back-back-back room that winds around behind the bar lol. I didn't even know they had that. Felt like a secret room. We also had the peking duck and lettuce wrap, egg yolk ribs (I would have preferred the honey ribs) among other typical Chinese dishes. Nothing was extraordinary but it wasn't bad. The most fucked up part was when the bill came and told us it was CASH ONLY ... like wtfbbqsauce what restaurant in Vancouver (not Richmond) sells expensive items like lobster and expects cash only?!... they made no mention of this when we called for reservations, and even called the day before to make sure I wanted to hold a lobster rice for me incase it was sold out. Super lame to have the whole family dig through their purses and wallets to chip in cuz nobody carries that much cash walking around... so just a heads up if you plan to order Alaskan King Crab and end up having to wash dishes haha. |
