And so, it seems like we ran out of telephone numbers again...
Get ready for 672 on 4 May 2019!!!

On 22 November 2017, the Commission received a consensus report (236/250/604/778RE01A) regarding the area codes in question from the RPC (the report).
The report included a planning document and a relief implementation plan.
In the planning document, the RPC recommended that area code relief be provided by implementing a distributed overlay of a new area code on the NPA served by area codes 236, 250, 604, and 778;
area code 672 be used as the new area code; and
the relief date be 4 May 2019, which is 12 months before the revised projected exhaust date of May 2020.
Honestly I have barely even seen any 236 numbers around. It "only" came into effect four and a half years ago (1 Jun 2013). Most people around me don't even know it's a local area code in use. And we're running out already lol

MarkyMark 02-15-2018 06:56 PM

I still remember the good old days where you could pick up your landline and just put in the 7 numbers without the area code lol

JSALES 02-15-2018 07:03 PM

A new area code already, I only can remember 604 and 778 lol

Obsideon 02-15-2018 09:26 PM

Same here I barely ever see the 236 number it's so few and far in between that sometimes I forget and think it's another city.
My work guest book has over thousands of numbers and I only see about 50 numbers starting with 236. In comparison there's 17 numbers with 512 area code and I had to google that was from Texas lol.

FerrariEnzo 02-15-2018 09:41 PM

omg.. we just got 236 and its all used up.. wtf

Yes we did, you just didn't have to dial it for local calls.

bobbinka 02-15-2018 11:16 PM

not sure how reliable this is, but straight from wiki:

Quote:

Every competitive local exchange carrier is allocated blocks of 10,000 numbers—corresponding to a single prefix—for every rate centre where they plan to offer service, even in the smallest hamlets. While most rate centres do not need nearly that many numbers, a number cannot be allocated elsewhere once assigned to a rate centre and carrier. This results in thousands of wasted numbers.

Seems like there are a lot of 236 numbers available.

CO Code Status for NPA 236

Rogers nabbed all the 8xx numbers and assigned them in Vancouver.lols.

jerche 02-16-2018 12:28 AM

not like this matters, not like we remember people's numbers nowadays

the only number i remember now is my useless icq # lol

SeedBNR 02-16-2018 12:51 AM

wtf I just saw a 236 number for the first time today. I thought it was an out of province number lol

Bouncing Bettys 02-16-2018 01:17 AM

I remember when 604 was province wide, renting a rotary phone from BCTel while having one of the longest numbers to dial - last for digits were 0897. I also remember their only being three different number combinations starting with 372, 374, or 828 for Kamloops (or at least that's all young me ever came across). I think it was 2007 or 2008 when we could no longer dial locally without an area code.

asian_XL 02-16-2018 01:37 AM

It is dumb to call it area code anymore. Not sure why we have to add 604 when it wasn't required 20 years ago, can't they just add extra digit to the front or back? so everyone calling outside the province should then dial 604 to make it unique.

My first home number: 272-XXXX
New landline number should be: 2272-XXXX
Cellphone number should start with 5 or something: 5XXX-XXXX

look at the numbers in China

This may shed some light to your question.

TL;DR - North America wanted to be different I guess.

SkinnyPupp 02-16-2018 07:42 AM

I would have hated to deal with china numbers back in the day, but these days it's totally irrelevant how long a number is... I remember my phone number, my wife's, and that's about it. Oh and the number I had when I was 5

exilegod 02-17-2018 12:25 AM

oh god, i only remember 604 and 778
250 is too island for my taste

ToneCapone 02-17-2018 06:49 AM

been using 236 for a year now... at first it was kinda cool... now its brutal to explain to every single person it's local not LD. Not to mention all the missed calls of people trying to dial with a 1 when its local. Stay away unless you get a number you really love

PeanutButter 02-18-2018 07:34 PM

LOL.

TIL 236 is a local number.

bcrdukes 02-18-2018 09:04 PM

We can all thank IoT devices and M2M devices to use up all the numbers. Wait until 5G comes into production.

take it as a blessing when people can't reach you
