What is your data backup plan?

Well....it finally happened to me....after so many years....decades....a 6 month old Seagate 2TB external portable USB 3.0 died and with it a ton of data that I did not have backed up. ( I haven’t had to deal with a HDD failure in so long but nowadays a failure is disastrous due to the sheer amount of data we accumulate)

Well...no...my 1000s of photos are on google photos and my mp3 collection is backed up at the parents computer.

But...lost a ton of mkv mp4 etc....luckily the vast majority are still available.
Also, tons of historical stuff....gone pooooof

So...how do you handle backing up of precious data...do you back it up twice on 2 different mediums?

...and in the event of another catastrophic failure...what data recovery software has worked for you?!

Home:
Synology NAS DS218+ (2 x 4T Hitachi)
A couple 2T 3.5HDD on USB dock

Parent's Home: to back up all the non-porn and non-game data
Synology NAS DS111 (1 x 2T WD Blue)

Both places have 500Mbps internet

The important stuff, I keep on an ownCloud server and it's sync'd with every PC/Laptop I have. Even syncs two machines at work.

My 30tb media server is currently not backed up. Hopefully that'll be addressed in the next year. I may grab a pair of EMC DD670's from work after we upgrade them. I'll have one at home and one somewhere else. Backup goes to the local unit and gets replicated to the remote unit.

Most people won't do what I do or have easy access to used server equipment. If you just want cheap remote backup, go with Backblaze for unlimited backup storage.

I don't really have anything important on my computer. My photos are on iCloud with copies on my iPhone and iPad, and important documents are also on iCloud with an offline copy on the computer.

my entire storage hard drive is sync'd with a cloud service.

doesnt take up any space, don't have to maintain it, don't have to think about anything except forking over money once a year.

access my shit from anywhere, every computer the same. chances of losing files is exponentially lower than any self maintained plan.

photo and any important files goes to my google drive. Movies and stuff that I downloaded are store on my HDD which I mean isn't that important.

For those of you with cloud-based backups, what's the cost/GB or TB?

Right now I've got most of the important stuff on redundant drives that are different models purchased at different times, but we're on the wait list for a safe deposit box so it's all in one location which is no bueno.

BackBlaze is unlimited for $5/month. Less if you pay upfront for a year.

Anyone have experience with Sync (https://www.sync.com/)?
Also a Canadian company if that makes a difference for your stored data.

tiger_handheld 03-05-2018 07:58 PM

anyone use WD my cloud - i'm super frustrated getting the sync'ing to work.

Unlimited access, or unlimited storage volume? Ideally I'd like to back up several TB worth.

For some reason I thought iCloud was way more expensive. I would've turned this on and not have lost all my photos if it was only $15 a year :( using Google Photos with my Pixel now and it's been great.

I also use Google Photos as a place to store my other photos, you can't keep them at the highest resolution but it's ok for what I need. I use GitHub for all my personal projects, used to use Dropbox for this but decided to just pay $7 a month

For my non cloud storage I use a 2TB time machine external for my Macbook, 2TB external for my photos and I have a NAS that I back up the 2TB external to.

GabAlmighty 03-06-2018 07:36 AM

I've got two external hard drives. I back up the back up every now and then.

Photos: Amazon unlimited photo storage (free if you are a prime member)

Data: Had unlimited Amazon storage... but they are discontinuing it :fuckthatshit: I think I'm just going to subscribe a big Google storage and call it a day.

Plus a local backup at DAS...

rageguy 03-06-2018 10:50 AM

iCloud family sharing, $3.99/month for 200GB split with the partner. All photos and files stored there. We used to use Time Machine to backup but that's no longer needed with everything on iCloud.

From what I heard, it's unlimited storage. My coworker is over 15TB at the moment so he's really testing if what they say is true. I'd use it myself but they don't have a client for Windows Server. Can't get it to work without some workarounds and I don't like workarounds...

2 portable backup drives. seagate and WD.

2 drives in the PC

Acura604 03-06-2018 12:52 PM

will pick up a WD 6TB external drive today from COSTCO. $155.

twitchyzero 03-06-2018 04:08 PM

second drive on the PC
NAS as a backup to the backup
everything is on-site though...so if there's a fire/theft I can kiss everything goodbye

winson604 03-07-2018 07:13 AM

I also use two 2TB External Drives with the focus on the pictures my wife and I have accumulated over our 12 years together. Literally like over a 100G's worth. The rest of the stuff are mostly important docs which I also have backed up in my Google Drive and DropBox as well as in my email. I rarely backup stuff now just because all photos automatically go onto Google Photos.
