The issue is it's usually more than that, but even if it is that long, save that shit for when it's not going to inconvenience anyone else. Like said above it could be the difference between the last car getting though the light or not.

true and I agree it can be frustrating when you're at the back of a left turn lane in a big intersection and the first person just killed half of the light

but a 2s delay happens all the time regardless of distracted driving (people completing their left turns a bit delayed or yielding to someone pulling out of a driveway at a fresh green)

someone here before said it best...it's when people get into their car they can throw out all their patience, if you were in a line-up at the store and the guy wasn't paying attention every second of the queue, do you throw your arms up in tantrum to protest? So why does that suddenly change when you're behind a wheel.

the whole argument angle here is that 80 people on an annual average lost their lives to distracted driving (don't know how that's verified, check victim's notifications?) Yet no one ever died from someone checking their phone, stationary.

by the way, CoV recorded a 40% higher than average homicide last year, how come we aren't hearing a blitz to step up patrol then? It always comes back to money.

If two seconds isn't a big deal. Wait till you're behind a couple cars. Wait for them to move, on a green. Then wait two Mississippi's before you proceed. Try it for the next week, see if it doesn't annoy you.

For me, it depends on the reason.

If you are a manual noob and stalled, I can forgive that.

But if you are texting and miss the green light, expect honks.

Why does it have to save lives to be necessary? It's a bad habit and somewhere along the line people have forgotten that driving deserves your full attention. If someone was standing in front of a door impeding others from getting in because they need to do finish their text then yeah, it would piss me off all the same. It's rude to assume your time is more valuable then the 10 people behind you. Pay attention.

the increased use of police manpower to better traffic efficiency?

why not just program the yellow light to come on before green since I'm already anticipating if i'm first of the pack

also doesn't hurt that it's an easy $2000 per head for icbc

Not entirely. There's also the argument that the increase in accidents are driving up rates. For everyone.

The increased homicide rate has been largely due to increased gang violence. For a number of reasons, gang homicides aren't as easy to solve as your typical civilian murder.
And I'm just speculating here, but I doubt they receive the same level of attention.

Honestly, at the end of the day, those are the rules. There's good reason for them. And they aren't that difficult to obey.
If people wanna risk getting slapped with 4 points and 400$ fine, go ahead. It ain't worth it to me though.

You're forced to pay attention to your revs, and speed. Automatic makes it easier for drivers to zone out.
This may be true to a degree, but once your skill becomes greater, driving manual is just as mindless as driving automatic.

listening to the revs become second nature, you'll downshift/upshift as necessary.

Is it true you can be ticketed even for just having your phone in the cup holder? Heard that's illegal too even if you're not touching it

just paraphrasing the words from the horse's mouth...it's what the police are saying as the driving force behind the new draconian penalties but we obviously know this is no coincidence to the ICBC 1.3 billion dollar short-fall

just don't give them a reason to pull you over. Don't scratch your balls, don't adjust your waist portion of your seatbelt, don't look down, don't shift, don't breathe

No. It's what the accident statistics are saying.

I don't think so. I think is fine as long as aren't using it when operating a car is fine.

Apple CarPlay & Google Play make it very easy to not get ticketed for distracted driving. All you have to do is press one button (which is the legal description of safe driving), then tell them what you want to do.
I find: addresses; phone numbers; text people; listen to texts; make appointments in my calendar and make phone calls from my CarPlay deck.
It also frees up my mind so that I can focus on driving.
When I used to try to text & drive, driving was the secondary process. Now it's my primary focus.
Play safe. Don't pay ICBC for your indiscretions.

It is illegal to have your phone in your car unless it is secured to a mount or inside a bag. If the phone is in your lap or cup holder or tray, even if you're not touching it, it is considered a violation.

Source: my sister got a ticket at a red light and a bicycle cop saw her phone in her cup holder. She was ticketed and educated on the law.

That's weird, some of those restrictions are contrary to what is listed in this PDF on the BC government website.

Yeah, that sounds weird.

Oh well, it's not like they can see the phone in the door pocket.

My RX-8 cupholder also has a cover on it, so I just need slide it close and no more fuss.

You'll need to keep waiting.
214.6 gives the government the right to put out regulations that define usage, storage etc without having to change the Act.
By keeping it so general, it's hard to fight, and it can be updated easier.

214.6 refers to the Lieutenant Governor in Council, not the government or the police force.

to be exact:
214.6 (c) gives the LG in Council the power to determine to what extent a hands free device may be used in a telephone function.

I put my phone in my cupholder all the time because I use Google Assistant. I would dispute a ticket under 214.4 (c) if I ever got dinged for it.
A phone with Google assistant connected to my car via Bluetooth is the very definition of that sub-section.
