African Safari - Big Cats

Hello everyone,

I was going through some of my old photos today and felt inspired to put together this post. These are some of my favourite photos of lions, leopards, and cheetahs from my various trips. I hope you enjoy seeing this and I am always open to feedback to help me develop my skills.

which park
and did you rent lens there or here

lowside67 05-01-2018 06:51 PM

Mostly Sabi Sand in Kruger, South Africa except for #7 which was in the Serengeti. I didn't rent gear, that's stuff I own/have owned (these photos are over 3 trips total). South Africa is really the only place that it's practical to rent gear, East Africa there isn't a place to very easily send stuff to.

Time of year definitely depends on where you are going. Africa is a massive continent that straddles the equator - places like the Serengeti and South Africa have almost opposite seasons.

Traditionally the winter (whenever it falls in a given part) is the "best" safari season as it is the driest and the brush is mostly dead so it makes it much easier to spot animals.

On the other hand, I went once in the "wet" season (ie summer) and it was HOT - think 35C, but everything was so green and lush that the opportunities I did have to shoot produced better photos in my opinion.

Hey awesome shots man. If you don't mind me asking: when did you go to Tanzania? What did you do there? and how much did you pay for your Safari?

lowside67 05-02-2018 10:22 AM

I was in Tanzania in July of 2014 - I was only in the Serengeti for 2 days as part of a longer tour (2 months), we only had 2 game drives there.

My fiance and I intend to go to the Masai Mara in September 2019 as part of our honeymoon. We will be going after the migration which reduces the cost a bit but it is still a very expensive part of the world to travel to - our tour will be around $5k USD/person for 6 nights including all the odds and ends such as flights from Nairobi to the lodge.

One of the best values around is Sabi Sand in South Africa. I have been two separate times to the same property ("Elephant Plains") and for $1800USD/person for 4 nights, you simply can't get better wilderness viewing for the money.

Sweet sauce!
Awesome stuff!
Love the lighting on this one, my favourite photo...

Spoiler!

One more just for fun. It's not a "portfolio" quality image but really captures the beauty of the landscape, plus a prerequisite cat in the tree... hope you enjoy.
