Being Chinese I always have at least a couple hundo in cash on me because I'm prepared that many places I go might be cash only. With that said, I only really pay with CC if it's an option.

Is been proven that people are far more likely to over spend if they use credit card vs cash. Maybe try to do your research. Is not about people lacking self control is about the big companies trying to get you to spend more/rag the system to be in their favor. Why do you think credit card company give you so much incentives to use their products and why retail stores loves it when you use your credit card even though they have to pay a % transcration fees? They aren't dumb lol.
Is happens more common than you think lol. Happens to most people when they go grocery shopping. Oh that's on sale, I still have some of that at home but let's get it anyways, let's try these new snacks...... then you get a big bill that went over your budget and since you can pay with your credit card you just get them anyways vs if you only have cash to get what you need then you are more less likely to get anything that you don't need.
What you just described demonstrates a lack of self control. If you need the limitation of cash to force yourself not to spend, you are the problem. Just because something is on sale or you are given incentives to use a credit card, doesn't mean you have to spend. No one is putting a gun to your head. If you are so easily manipulated to buy something simply because it is on sale, again, you are the problem.
You're damn right businesses aren't dumb. They're preying on the dumb people. The only question is whether you're one of them or not.

You sound like a true capitalist
If you assume 90% of the population are "dumb people" to be preyed upon, then you are correct.

He's basically saying that businesses are out to get him to make him spend more than he needs to. I'm saying, of course they are, but no one's forcing him to spend more than he needs. My comment about "preying on dumb people" is in this context, not that anyone who buys something is dumb.

It's basic psychology though. If you are in the vast majority of society, it doesn't mean you "lack self control" it just means that you're "normal" or "average". If you have more self control than the average person, you're an outlier.

reminds me of the lottery commercials, and the casinos. They try to get you to spend with their promotion bullshit. There is a lot to do with psychology and its pretty scary stuff.
Some ppl still give me weird looks when I still carry cash on me here in China
Welcome to China bro, where ppl go "U still carry cash"? A lot of ppl I know have been cashless for around 5 years or so over here
The whole scan the QR code or be scanned is just way to fucking easy lol, I know a kid that makes minimum wage and he gets his paycheck through wechat pay/alipay (they just sents it to him lol)
I went up to a cute chick and asked her if she'd let me take a photo of her for $30 she slapped me, she said to me that "I AIN'T A WHORE!"
But other than that I have seen every car on display in DTP just by cruising about in Richmond, thank you very much for collecting them together and get someone to sing a cover for "fuck you".
OH FUCK YOU OH OH OOOOH~

Yes and it sucks for a tourist there. So many times I give cash but they don't have change. I use wechat but there is no way we can tie our bank account to wechat yet so we are force to either use cash or credit card. Given the fact only big stores in big cities accept foreign country credit card we are stuck with cash only. Is great if you live in China and have an account in a Chinese bank but the whole QR code is still taking money out from your banking account so if you have no money in your account it still won't work.
Going back again this Nov and that's the one thing I hate atm. Lot's of store won't have change when I go and buy something.

Pretty sure you can refill WeChat with cash at places like 7-11 and McDonald's

I'm pretty sure I saw a sign at McDonald's saying you can refill your wechat there. It MAY have been AliPay though. They promote both heavily (McDonalds franchise in HK was sold to the mainland a few years ago) I should have said so before, sorry
i do at small stores cuz it's easier to exchange ($100 for a $100 isn't a big deal for them) and the fact that it small business which means less restrictions (aka it's their own business)
I just go buy a bottle of water and then ask if I can exchange cash for wechat money (normally they do it for u)
I'm not sure if China is a head of its time or just different
On the side: if u have a hk homecoming card, then u can get a SIM card any where or try taobao (I heard they ship to Canada now)

Thanks! Got a friend currently in China now I just ask her to get buy a simcard off Taobao for me when she comes back. My god 24GB of date for $21 CAD is dirt cheap. And is good for 6 months.
Other than strippers I can't think of any (legal) reason why I need to ever have cash. Any situation I can think of right now off the top of my head has an electronic work around.
There is the odd time a system will have an outage, but that's why I have a debit card and two different credit cards.

yes it has, I have friend that don't even carry wallets anymore now as The smartphone payment is super easy
I'm not sure if this will ever catch on to the rest of the world but I can pretty much do almost everything with my smartphone
From my daily transportation to my 3 to 4 meals a day to my daily shopping to leisure fun/activities, it's all done my smartphone (heck I still a video when they were introducing smartphone payment for arcade game operation, which means u can just scan a QR code and straight up pay for your game through your phone)
True story: this local arcade I frequent went back to cash only for a while and they lost quite a bit of business before going back to giving smartphone payment option
I'm guessing they are trying to test water to see if cashless will work (or go far), but personally I still carry and it's a safety net for me

WePay and AliPay are HUGE now, and they have been pushing it heavily in the last 3 years. Even in Hong Kong they are pushing it heavily in the last year. They are trying to get into every store they can, and offer a lot of incentives to use them instead of cash or credit card.
For instance, like I said they are at McD's and they offer something like $50 off instantly, plus another $10 off every so many purchases as well.
