Class Action: Shaw Cable Engaged In Unlawful Pricing Scheme Favoring Chinese Speakers

Shaw Communications Inc. and Shaw Cablesystems GP face a class action over an alleged “unlawful pricing scheme” under which the cable giant offered lower rates to Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking customers.

Quote:

Martin Halliday filed a notice of civil claim under the Class Proceedings Act in BC Supreme Court on October 1 on behalf of Shaw customers “who were not the beneficiaries of the unlawful pricing scheme.”

Halliday claims Shaw operated the scheme through its “Multicultural Customer Care team” in the two years leading up to the lawsuit.
“The defendants routinely discriminates [sic] against existing and potential customers by offering a discounted rate exclusively to individuals who communicate with Shaw in either Mandarin and/or Cantonese,” the claim states. “Shaw has been providing its Chinese Medium Customers with significantly lower prices for its internet and/or cable services as compared to its customers who communicate in languages other than Mandarin or Cantonese in order to negotiate their prices.”

Halliday claims he called Shaw customer service this summer and a customer service employee allegedly described him the companies’ “best package,” which was “demonstrably worse than the pricing available to Chinese Medium Customers under the unlawful pricing scheme.”
Damn I should have called into Shaw with my broken Chinese, ya think they'll give a banana like me a hookup? :lawl:

love shaw

nsx042003 10-22-2018 09:45 PM

lol, no complaints here

Although Telus is cheaper for me compared to Shaw by a long shot. Not even CLOSE

68style 10-22-2018 11:13 PM

I have several friends who work for different parts of Shaw and they confirmed this is 100% true and BS... company flat out doesn't care... telecoms is a dirty dirty business.

ImportPsycho 10-23-2018 01:09 AM

I signed up internet 150 $60/m for 2 years, plus $250 bill credit, which works out to be around $50/m for 2 years.
Promo was open to everyone, on their website in last Aug.
Please tell me what Chinese "deal" is better than this?

If you ask me, they discriminate anyone who's not willing to put up a fight.
If you are good at haggling and willing to make multiple phone calls, aka Asians, you will get a good deal. If you are pushover like me, you either pay the regular price or wait for some crazy back to school/holiday sale.

68style 10-23-2018 01:23 AM

You're relating your experience, which is fine, but the rest is theoretical and hearsay on your part.

Many people can attest to a completely separate team being assembled for taking calls, and starting at a better deal than on the English call in centre. This is not imaginary, everyone who works at Shaw is well aware of it and they don't give a fuck about the optics of it because they're stupid and arrogant and trying to make as much money as possible all the time............. but now they're going to have to own up.

GS8 10-23-2018 02:24 AM

Mmm, love paying my fucktasically high telecom bills along with everything else that's fucktastically expensive.

TRUE NORTH!

Badhobz 10-23-2018 03:19 AM

I thought that new telecommunications bill suppose to lower our telecom rates ? Wasn't this a thing a while back ? It's the same bill that forced Rogers and other cell companies to give us unlocked phones now due to monopolistic practices

I loved Shaw when I lived in Richmond. Super reliable, no complaints. Move to Delta and discovered they don't offer service so stuck with Eastlink/Delta Cable. Similar interface as Shaw but literally the worst customer service for any industry. Paying $225 for a full meal deal-type package. Ugh, shitty. Then Telus comes along and throws in their fiber optic cable and earned our business. $99/month for the same package we had with Delta Cable and they threw in a $500 pre-paid visa. They screwed up and sent another $500 pre-paid visa in my wife's maiden name. So $1,000 free, no bill for the first 2 months and $99 after that? Boy did I sleep on that deal. The system is way faster than any Shaw/DC I've seen and I have yet to have any issues with it. I'm waiting for that though as good things don't last.

Moral: renegotiate with your current service provider every 12 months. If you sit passive they will railroad you.

underscore 10-23-2018 10:22 AM

The major companies are all shit, Shaw is just the least shitty in my experience. The amount of slimy fuckery Telus has tried to pull on my family and friends over the years means that Shaw would have to hit pretty monumental levels of douchebaggery before I'd even consider giving Telus a cent.

If they do I'll shoot you a few bucks to call in for me and get me a better rate. I wonder how far I could get with just Google translate.

My contract is up and I got an email offering me Shaw 150 for $85/month for 2 years, with a $100 credit. The current promo on the Shaw site is $50/mo for 6 months then $95/mo for the rest of the 2 years, with a $100 credit. What they're offering me works out to $1940 total over 2 years, but the new customer deal is $1910. What the fuck.

Really? Don't go for that deal. I got Shaw 300 for two years at $90 per month. I just renewed two weeks ago.

underscore 10-24-2018 01:03 PM

What were you on before and what did you do to get that price? Even 150 is overkill for us at the moment but if I start streaming 4k the unlimited usage might be nice, especially for only $5/month more.

Talking to their support people apparently the site promo is for new customers only, and you have to not be a customer for 90 days to count as "new". That's too much hassle for $30 but it's still a stupid way to set things up on their end.

Aiyah, this is too funny, my mom and dad were always good hustlers towards sales people..

Shaw WideOpen Internet 150 - $60/mo on a 2-year ValuePlan

internet 150 for$60/month 2 years contract and 250 credit (New customer)

I just renewed my contract internet 300 for $80/month 2 years contract

Hondaracer 10-26-2018 06:34 PM

That’s a great deal.

Imo there’s gotta be a tipping point eventually because Shaw has been undercutting Telus for the last year or so, problem is Telus has to pay for the fiber build and Shaw can manage to push through 300mbs on shitty old coax

threezero 10-26-2018 09:25 PM

Can confirm this is true.

Someone I know doesn’t speak a lick of English. He is on a $30 student plan.
Yea he is not a student.
