too young considering a bb gun is usually used like a toy.. unsupervised, and who knows if he'll try to sneak it to school or outside somewhere.

yeah you don't want to be responsible for loss of eye sight or someones windows.

i had plenty of close calls with steel BB's bouncing off from hard surfaces back to me.

I can't recall exactly what age my dad officially gave me his air gun, but I know I was shooting it at 5yrs old with his supervision and instruction. I recall using it unsupervised by the time I was 7 or 8 out at the cottage with some of the neighbourhood kids with their BB guns. Before heading out I was told not to shoot animals except crows and keep our fire towards the forest and away from the cottages and the lake. Except for a small snake we shredded to bits, because we didn't realize that snakes will continue move long after death, we didn't get up to much trouble, but had a lot of fun.

Really depends on where he will be using it (rural vs city), the instruction he may receive from a competent adult, and if he demonstrates the maturity to handle a firearm safely.

I was debating buying my kid an air soft gun this year for Xmas, he wants one. I choose not to because I don't want to have to drive him out there all the time and he'll have nobody to go with. If I did buy him one it would be locked in my gun safe because I know what I was like as a kid at his age.

When I was 12 my dad had unsecured rifles, shotguns and handguns all over our house, 1980's fuck gun safes and trigger locks. My friends would come over and no shit we'd run around the house with the guns, thankfully dad wasn't dumb enough to leave the fucking things loaded.

Forgot all about air soft guns. They are a good stepping stone to air guns and bb guns, but still require safety and maturity.

There was a kid on my hockey team who got into his dad's guns with a friend and that friend ended up accidentally killing himself. His dad was in the RCMP so he should have known better. My dad has always used gun safes and trigger locks and follows regulations to a T, even in the 80s.
