I found this interesting:

In total, there were 36,617 luxury cars sold in B.C. in 2018, comprised of seven luxury car categories. All categories recorded falls, except the luxury compact SUV category that rose 4.2 per cent in sales to 11,466.

There were 135 Maseratis sold in B.C. last year, compared to 248 in 2017. Mercedes sold 8,939 cars here in 2018, down from 9,903 in 2017. Other losers included BMW and Jaguar, while Land Rover saw its sales rise 10 per cent to 2,351 units.

In 2017, B.C. set a record for luxury car sales at 38,006 units. In 2010 there were 12,447 luxury cars sold in the province.

In B.C., total new car sales fell 5.6 per cent in 2018, while the luxury market fell 3.7 per cent. This compared to a 2.6 per cent drop for all new cars nationally.

The 2018 figures show British Columbians prefer Asian vehicles (47.1 per cent of market), followed by North American cars (36 per cent) and European cars (16.9 per cent). Among Japanese cars, the big winner in 2018 was Mitsubishi, that saw an almost 30 per cent hike in year over year sales to 3,266 units sold. Acura, Lexus and Mazda were all down.

Among the European cars, Maserati took a big hit, while Volvo had the biggest percentage jump of 30.5 per cent to 1,126 units sold.

Straight speculation. But Mitsubishi probably had a shit year in 2017 and slashed prices in 2018 to recoup some demand. Looking at their lineup, I can't see any models that could've caused such a rebound.

Mitsu's Outlander PHEV has been very popular as it's the cheapest high-riding PHEV you can get.

Mitsubishi Outlander was the low bid winner for the Intermediate SUV category for federal government this year, I’d imagine that accounted for a number of those sales.

im surprised they even moved 135 mazzy's last year. The god damn Jeep grandlevante, or the shit ghibli's are abominations of the brand. Hell even the new CEO said they fucked up as they were trying to become a mainstream brand instead of staying exotic and exclusive.

Build quality on new Maserati's is horrific. The SUV isn't bad but it's priced too high.

report is correct, talked to everyone in the luxury industry that i know and sales were down quite a bit for 2018... hopefully 2019 is a bit better!

The luxury car tax has taken a toll but the biggest factor is what's happening to our local RE market. A lot of the luxury car sales especially exotic cars over the past couple of years were tied to RE. People made big profits, bought fancy things like cars but with the RE in decline and profits shrinking people are more cautious. Also rates going up mean lease/finance rates go up.

Isn't this in line with the automotive market in general? I listen to Bloomberg radio on my way to work and they always go on about how new car sales have dropped in 2018 for most brands.

I was going to say the same thing about the RE market.


My buddy just drove away in his PLugin Outlander. For the money, I wish we had looked into it over our CRV. Volvo’s way up, that’s not surprise. They are killing it and people are finally starting to change their tone towards Volvo’s.

What about Tesla? With no history, their numbers must be absurd.

Pricing ain't bad for the outlander PHEV, and with incentives you get $2500 off.

They are being sold on their visual appeal and interior design (and marketing campaign). Those who know more about the technical side of things,will realize their long term reliability is garbage.

In terms of reliability, I'd say they aren't much more reliable than a Mazzy, or most Chrysler products (and that's not saying much for the premium they command).

In the luxury market, who really keeps their vehicles more then a few years? Personally anything other then Japanese I’d be steering away from.

yes Outlander PHEV is nice but i'm not seeing it littered everywhere on the street, so it is a surprise to me too

maybe less new luxury cars means less crazy icbc rate hikes...one can hope LUL

Tesla?.....for the price you're nearing Exotic car prices without a worry about trying to track down a power station,and how long do you have to drive a Tesla before you're up above how much you're suppose to be saving on fuel using electric only? :suspicious: i imagine the cost of a break down in a electric car would be costly than a fuel car too.

I thought nowadays Tesla's have a reasonably long EV range of like 500km+. Charging stations are everywhere now. I don't think people buy a Tesla with the sole purpose to save money on gas though. My car barely gets 270km a tank with like 1/3rd of the hp.

That and I heard from agents that they changed the write off parameters to like $800/month or so. Plus much more stringent on what you can write off with supporting evidence and tracker and all.

That $800+12% tax per month is the limit on lease expense i think.

However, I find that CRA will be more likely to be digging their finger and nose up your butthole asking for supporting docs if total annual vehicle expenses exceed the $10k-11k area.
