My daily clunker, 2002 Echo died on me and I can't get it started. The engine cranks over but doesn't fire up. No codes from the OBDII so I'm at a loss.

I should probably try to figure out whether the problem is with the fuel system or the ignition system. Has anyone tried to put propane from a portable torch into the air inlet while cranking to see if it will start, or is that not a good idea? There is power going to the EFI relay in the engine compartment but beyond that, I have no idea.

Any help would be appreciated.

You check for spark? Can you hear the fuel pump priming?

I haven't spent much time on diagnosing the problem. I don't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key on, that's why I started with trying to follow the current path. It's been so long that I've done any work on a 4 cycle engine that even my compression guage hose is hardened and cracked. I'll wait for a drier day before I jump into it again since I can drive my work van for now.

#1 pull out one of the plugs, connect plug to the spark plug wire and put it near a ground, and crank the motor checking for spark
If there is spark then move onto #2

#2 crank the motor and smell the exhaust and see if there is any smell of gasoline. Most likely it won't if you don't think you hear the fuel pump priming.

Don't think you will need your compression gauge unless you think you lost compression on every cylinder.

At the age of your car, I would assume a dead fuel pump.

Checked today and found there was spark and fuel. Looks like the plugs are fuel fouled so I'll pick up a set of plugs tomorrow and see if they make a difference.

The new $120 coil assembly that I put on a couple of months ago fell apart when I pulled on it to get it out of the spark plug well :ahwow: It had glued itself onto plug #3 and wouldn't let go.
