Modern cars are collecting telematics & driving habits, location history, phone address book entries, call history, pictures. What else? This information is stored on the vehicle and an unknown quantity is transmitted to manufacturers.

It’s entirely plausible that this information could become the subject of marketing, surveillance, litigation, and insurance ratings & usage, in ways that are adverse to individuals and privacy. Possibly in ways we can’t foresee. I get the impression manufacturers are compiling this data before they know what to do with it.

I can foresee this being passed off as metadata but that position has led to obscene privacy violations and I don’t trust it.

72% of people don’t know this data is being collected. Did we really give meaningful consent? What if my wife agreed to the terms? What is my rental car collecting about me? It seems to be full of holes. Can one even opt out without losing basic features?

Pipeda privacy regulations have rules around accountability, identifying purposes, consent, limiting collection, limiting use, disclosure and retention, openness, and individual access. It sounds like the Act isn’t being followed. I’m not sure if this information falls under the jurisdiction of pipeda, which is even more concerning. In the US the on-board info seems to have some legal safeguards but the transmitted data seems to be fair game.

I don’t want this info collected about me, my family, or my car. Does opting out really turn off the switch?

In 2010 I took my Evo X to North Shore Mitsubishi to have the front plate mounted (it was an import from the US).

I haven't heard a thing from them since, and sold my car years ago.

Last month in New Jersey I rented what they bizarrely called an Eclipse. I paired my phone and 45 minutes later I receive a phone call from North Shore Mitsubishi inviting me to a sales event they were having the next week.

(edit: I don't actually know if they were spying, but I told the sales person that I just happened to be driving a Mitsubishi at the moment he said 'Yes, that's why I'm calling!')

Where I worked before, this was a thing that some manufacturers did. We would have highly optioned models available and whoever drove them would sometimes receive a survey from the manufacturer (gm, Ford, Toyota, etc) regarding their experience driving whatever product they were driving. This was all kosher though as it was in a 4pt text signed contract

I've had eye tracking since 2008....my gf(now wife) making sure i'm not checking out other women while driving...

I'd say driving an old car is pretty much the only guarantee you have to escape this.

Yup, outside of my smart phone tracking every movement...the only thing my car is tracking is distance via the odometer. Old cars rule.

just dont buy vehicles wtih internet connectivity and even if you do there's gotta be a module/fuse you can yank out somewhere?
