Help me pick a pet As title says, I need help picking a dog. My girlfriend has always wanted a dog and now that she has the summer off to study she wants to get one since she'll be home all day. We both love dogs but shes not listening to me when I tell her theres a 14" shoulder height restriction. She thinks the strata wont care if it's 18-24" but I'm also on the strata and know they'll make a stink about it. They're all old retired people with noting better to do than complain and I hear all the complaints regarding dogs in the building. So, we've a 14" max shoulder height. Any breeds you can think of that would be suitable for a 1000sqft condo? I've only owned big dogs before and my knowledge on tiny dogs isn't so strong. |
Make her read all the Caesar’s books before you get a dog. Are you guys lazy? Do you go camping or hiking? Or is your hobby instagramming food. Going to be a lap dog? Or a pack leader? Or just a companion. Any allergies? We need way more information |
now that she has the summer off to study she wants to get one since she'll be home all day. This is the worst reason to get a pet. getting a pet is like a kid. cannot return after studies or summer. Suggest you guys sign up for Rover if you want temp entertainment and not perm responsibility. source: The mrs. wanted a dog and didn't realize how much work it is given a 12hr shift worker schedule would be few months later. |

This isn't my first rodeo with dogs. I just need some help finding a dog breed that falls in the 14" cataegory |
you are right, my friend's dog was told "too high" and strata was goign to measure to see how exact the dog was. WTF is right. Again, who's ruler are we using, which vet? can i just bring my own vet and measure and tell you to fuck off with his official email / measurements.... so many grey areas. |
Please consider rescuing a shelter dog. Not going to go crazy on you for it, just consider it. Many of them come from shitty puppy mills and need homes. |

Still searching for breeds that are 14" at shoulder height. I know there's a person in my building with an unregistered dog that's way oversized and is on the verge of being given daily fines for constantly failing to obey bylaws. I really don't agree with the rest of the council but there's not much I can do there and I really dont want to get a dog that grows past the limit and have to see her give the dog up. To show how old and bitter these people are - they made a person remove a hummingbird feeder because they're scared it'll attract ants... Maybe if they were ground floor... But they aren't |
Rescues will get a lot of Shiba Inus since they are a cute popular breed, yet typically require a lot more attention than other breeds, and can become downright dangerous if not trained properly. Most will likely be over 2 though, and already "troubled" requiring intensive retraining Source: Wife works at a dog shelter for the last 7 years Of course there's no "automatically bad" or "automatically good" breeds (though the closest to automatically good are labradors IMO) If you have such a strict height restriction, my advice would be to go to a shelter and look for a friendly young-ish mixed breed, like pom mixed with something, or corgi mixed with something, etc. Staff should be able to tell you if they think a dog is going to be bigger or that, or get one that is fully grown already so you know for sure. Good luck! |
Maybe consider fostering a dog from the SPCA. Since your GF hasn't owned a dog before, it sounds like she might not know what she's getting into. Getting a temp dog would be the best solution, until you decide if you want one or not. She might even change her mind on getting a larger breed. |
My mia is a 3/4 pom 1/4 shihtzu. Thankfully didn’t inherit any of the ugly shit traits, but didn’t get the typical pom undercoat. She is amazing. We take her hiking and camping, she’s incredibly physical. Especially when we compare her to my friends poms who just waddle around. She comes with me for my 10k runs too. We got the best of all worlds. She’s small and cuddly, super active, and keeps the cats in line if they try to claw cardboard etc. Not fixed yet and we think we want to breed her one day. Don’t be stressed trying to get as close to that 14” as possible. https://farm66.staticflickr.com/6553...74c45033_z.jpg Generated from my Apple iPhone using tools.sportscard.trade https://farm66.staticflickr.com/6553...f787abbc_z.jpg Generated from my Apple iPhone using tools.sportscard.trade https://farm66.staticflickr.com/6553...f8159b3f_z.jpg Generated from my Apple iPhone using tools.sportscard.trade |
