Podcasts!

I'm surprised there hasn't already been a thread made for podcasts, because I personally love them!

Some of my favourite podcasts to listen to recently are:

-david chang - he's a famous asian-american chef, who brings in a variety of guests that come from culinary, politics, entertainment, sports, comedy, writing.

-tim ferriss - he has some pretty thought-provoking podcasts specifically on performance, productivity, self-help, business.

-joe rogan - this guy needs no introduction. focus on comedy, but he brings in guests from all walks of life (comics, entertainment, business, etc)

I'm curious what you guys listen to, because I want to expand my podcast repertoire!

Give this a try if you enjoy RPGs.

Played some D&D when I was a kid and this totally sucked me in.

I subscribe to quite a few, but these 3 are the ones that I listen to almost every new episode.

Today Explained. Daily podcast from Vox that focuses on the days news and events, very well presented imo. A little heavy on American Politics sometimes, but to be expected in this time.

99% Invisible This ones really interesting, talks about all the little things in our lives that were shaped by design or circumstance.

Stuff You Should Know Think anyone that listens to podcasts already knows about this one. Top ranking podcast, light, sometimes educational, a splash of comedy. Always my go to recommend when people ask where to start.

I listen to most episodes of Joe Rogan, though lately it's been getting a bit grating. He has the tendency to cover the same talking points over and over (understandable given the amount and length of his shows) but sometimes there are these specific dumbass things he just has to go on about constantly. Like questioning scientists because they eat at MacDonald's, shit like that. With Coronavirus, this has happened way more often. But he often has great guests on, and I learn quite a bit from following them afterwards.

Another good one is What A Cartoon! which has 2 hour long retrospectives on individual cartoon series, focusing on one episode. So they'll talk about the history of how the show was created, who worked on it, etc, and then recap the episode. Great stuff, they go over all my old favourites. Still waiting on a Gummi Bears episode though

Also been listening to Around the NFL since I became a fan in 2012. Same hosts the entire time, and they have a great rapport. Often funny, and they avoid the typical "sports talk" bullshit. They don't try to play of controversy, but also don't shy from it when it happens. They don't pretend to be experts on everything and don't pretend to know how everything is going to go. Pretty much the perfect sports show for me.

All the other podcasts I listen to are videogame related. I'm sure everyone who is into games has their own favourites. I listen to Rebel FL, Retronauts, Giant Bomb, 8-4 Play

And Wrestling Observer but that's subscription based. Been a subscriber since 2002 I think

Yeah I agree, Joe Rogan can be opinionated at times, especially when it comes to things like exercise and weed. He's quite subtle with it too - rather than explicitly disagreeing with the person, he'll just question the heck out of them lol. He always brings interesting guests though and that's honestly why I listen too.

I recently just listened to a podcast called Rabbit Hole, which so far talks about how the internet (ie. youtube) feeds our addiction through algorithms and actually brainwashes us. It's told through a real-life case study with commentary, so it's quite the cliffhanger!

I listen to a lot of GenuisBrain (David So), it is the most unfiltered and funniest life stories ever

Just listened to one of their episodes yesterday - I love how it is so raw and uncut (leaving in all the swearing and profanity lol), which is what a real conversation should be like.

For me a podcast is only as good as the guests, if the guests are interesting to you you're over halfway to enjoying the show.

Rogan, I listen to 90% of his podcasts unless the guest really doesn't interest me then I skip it. Last week he had Donnell Rawlings on he's hilarious but man what a tough one to watch he was constantly talking over Joe and interrupting it was unbearable. I'm not into the philosophers and astrophysicists so when he has those guys I take a hard pass.

Mike Tyson, decent I enjoy hearing the stories and he has cool guests.

Joey Diaz, I can take him in smallish doses.

Bert Kreischer sometimes but I prefer him on the Two Bears One Cave podcast where he's teamed up with Tom. I'm not big fan of Tom Segura's Your Moms House Podcast because his wife is anoying AF.

Steve-O just started one, he's not the best host right now but has potential and access to interesting guests.

Brittany Furlan has some cool guests as does Marc Maron.

Just watched Mike Tyson's episode with Dame Lil lol. Nice to see that he's able to redirect his focus from boxing to show hosting, which is a nice positive outlet. You see some famous athletes fall off once they retire because they played sports their whole life and don't know what to do when they're not.

For sure, Mike has really changed he's a lot smarter then I ever gave him credit for. I mean you can tell he's a little punch drunk from all the shots he's taken over the years but he still has some valuable perspective.

Here's some podcasts that I listen to below, a lot of nerdy political stuff, so feel free to ignore that if you wish, haha. I used to listen to Joe Rogan more often back in the day, but I find his podcast has changed, and not for the better.

It seems as though he's pushing a political agenda nowadays, and I find that though he has some excellent guests, they never get into topics I'd like to hear. His podcasts tend to go on tangents in which he has more interest in "Hey Jamie go find that moose video!", meanwhile I'd like to hear the guest speak. It becomes a little redundant, I get his has a lot of podcasts so it's tough, but he needs to sometimes pipe down and let the guest steer the conversation.

I also find his guests tend to shy away or fear with disagreeing with him as well, either due to optics, or his mountain of vehement fans that will tear them apart online if not seeing eye to eye with him.

Anyways see below.

I listened to an episode on ear hustle last night and learned that apparently inmates go on a lockdown too lol. double lockdown. It's like maximum security where they don't get to leave their cells at all. I'd go beserk.

It's pretty fucked huh? Great stories on that podcast though, they cover a lot of what it's like living in a maximum security prison.

I don't have that many, but here are a few I like:

Art of Charm - originally it was a pick-up podcast, but now it's about self-development. Sometimes can get a bit long winded, but overall it's a very good podcast, and it's helped me on my own path of self-improvement and self-development

Now or Never - I listen when it's on CBC radio, it's about doing things that you don't expect/ can't expect, yourself to do. Self challenging.

Terrible, Thanks for Asking - It's about really, absolutely terrible life situations that people have gone through, and how they have been coping. It's been helpful for me, in difficult times

Love Letters - kinda cheesy, but odd stories about dating in modern society. Some touching, some sad.
