Boosting wifi signal to the exterior of the house
 

My inlaws have a pool and in the summer while lounging by the pool it would be nice to have wifi.

The main problem is their office and router are on the opposite end of the house in a room which kills the signal to even most of the house.

Now I know moving the router would be crucial, i just don't see that happening.

What extender/booster would be best to help get some wifi outside?

Which ISP do your in-laws use? The ISP may offer a custom WiFi booster pod solutions. We have one from Telus and it works great.

Scrap the built in wifi and buy some Ubiquiti Unifi access points. I bought a 3 pack years ago and it covers the whole house plus the yard. Cost me around $350. You'll need ethernet cabling where you want to mount the AP though... but that's going to be the case with whatever extender you want to use anyways.

I found that the wifi extender in my garage was too weak to do anything beyond messages.

about about those wifi boosters that send signals through power lines, just stick it in to an exterior plug or if the pool is by the garage plug it in to the garage?

someone else PM'd me giving the same type of info.

they're with shaw so i looked at what they offer and they have these "pods" but they need the BlueCurve modem/plan.

So i'll find out if they have that or not and i'll get them to upgrade


being with shaw, getting an ethernet cable run downstairs so the modem could be closer to the pool won't be an option

wouldn't bother with range extenders as those suck. Powerline will work but depending on the electrical lines in the house.

Best will be ethernet cable to near the back of the house and hook up an access point. If you won't want a cable ran across the house, can use ethernet to coax converter if there is a coax outlet at the back of the house and in the office area.

Power line adapters suckkkkk can duck up your entire network.

Imo as I PM’es OP I’d say best value is with your ISP extenders, the Telus boost system works great for the price as does the Shaw one I would assume.

Google wifi does the same thing slightly better for about double the price. Obviously running hardwired access points is the best best but the wireless mesh network boosters work quite well without having to run wires everywhere.

I'm running Telus Boost right now and it's great. That said, I'm also hardwiring the whole place, eventually.

At the end of the day, I figure, it's just a few drywall patches. I'll just terminate where the existing copper is, in each room.
