Wonder how this affects BBS Japan, if it does, since it's a separate entity.

Do they not share any reference designs or tooling?

In the course of insolvency in 2007, the company was taken over by the Belgian foundation Punch International NV. On April 1, 2012, Tyrol Equity AG (Innsbruck/Austria) joined co-investor Udo Wendland, to become the majority shareholder of the newly established BBS GmbH. The independent company BBS Motorsport GmbH, whose headquarters and corresponding production site was relocated to Haslach im Kinzigtal, is a subsidiary of BBS Japan Co. Ltd.

In June 2015, the majority share of BBS GmbH has been taken over by NICE Holdings Co., a Korean listed industrial group and they have committed to support the implementation of the BBS growth strategy.
BBS Japan is an entirely separate company it seems, of which the motorsport div is under as well (their racing wheels are all made in Japan through that div iirc).

i.e. all the RI-R/RI-D stuff is from BBS Japan, iirc the newer LM/LM-Rs too.

Hmmmm I never really could justify the price of aftermarket BBS wheels. I've had plenty of OEM BBS wheels, I'm surprised they will go broke considering they produce for oems

trollface 07-18-2020 01:30 PM

That's pretty much what happens when you only really design one type of style wheel and supply OEM on uber thin margins.

JDMDreams 07-18-2020 02:12 PM

But how can their margins be thin if each wheel is like $1000 each

When you buy a BBS replacement wheel from VW, that juicy profit is going to VW, not BBS. When you are buying that kind of volume, they know they can throw their weight around. Your material cost went up? HAHAH too bad.

If you're talking direct to consumer, how many ppl are actually buying 4k sets of wheels for their $5,000 GTI in the signature BBS snowflake design? That's pretty much all they make. They have no made anything unique in a long long long time and all their designs like the LM's have been ripped off 100 times last week on Alibaba.

IMO they just stuck with what they knew and failed to do adapt when everyone else moved in.

Not to mention, their distribution and dealer network was not exactly A+. BBS reminds me of Blackberry/Research In Motion.

BBS files for bankruptcy again. It isn't the first time. They will manage. They have experience.

twitchyzero 07-19-2020 08:21 PM

this is the 3rd time, i'm sure they'll still be around
