New Car Retainer

Wife and I was negotiating on a new car and we came to a number that all parties were happy with. However, the salesman came back told us in order for them to do the discount they need to have a $20K retainer because of the new car export rule.

I have never ever heard of dealership needing a retainer for them to sell you a car. Needless to say, we noped and walked out.

I am aware of the export rule, but that could be just as simple as a $10 lien on the car or signing some documents stating you are not to export the vehicle.

Can any new car sales chime on this retainer fee?

Thanks

The only thing I've heard of about was that Porsche was having major issues with people buying new inventory here to export back to Asia to sell as grey market cars.

Since foreign duty tax in Taiwan/China/HK is so high, even factoring in shipping and import costs, a profit could still be turned.

Porsche Canada eventually started "banning" certain people who were caught doing this, and then those people started offering 10-20K for people to buy the car under their name, transfer to the exporter then export for profit.

That's all I really know about this matter, never thought it would eventually get to a point where they would start asking for retainers, guess thats how bad the problem became.

Depends on the vehicle. Are we talking a 4Runner? Or a raptor/cayenne/gwagen
