Replacing Interior Doors
 

Quick question. Replacing all the door trim in my place as we speak, and I’m tossing around the idea of swapping out all interior doors while I’m at it.


Is it a real pain in the ass or are all hinge locations generally precut? Would it be as easy as swapping hinges, or is it going to be a big PITA getting new doors and using the old casings?

Hanging doors is tough. I would not recommend it if you haven’t done it before. It borders on more of an art than labour

My friend found a supplier who was going to replace his interior doors for like $80 a pop I think from brand new hollow core doors and if he brought them the doors they would mill all the hinges and handle hardware exactly like the doors he brought in. So all you’d have to do it hang the door back in the existing frame

Installing a brand new “pre-hung” door which comes in a new frame is VERY finicky and as I said, I wouldn’t recommend it. Especially if your doors are already closing/latching smoothly.

You bring up an interesting point. In the past I’ve had to trim my doors to stop them from rubbing, and some cases to even close. I assumed my house was falling over, but after taking the casings off I guess they could just be moving in there? They seem to be put in place, spaced out with some scrap wood and then covered in casing? Haha

$80 a door seems like a great price. I’ll be contacting them if I decide to replace.

Ehh your house still might be moving lol..I’m pretty sure mine is. Or at least the doors are swelling and retracting from heat and humidity lol

But yea when you pull off the casings you see all those shims etc. that’s how you square up the door. There isn’t really a guide as to how to do this properly, it has to do way more with the feel and how the door is closing etc than using a level and a tape. If your frames are fairly true I’d probably leave them

If I could find the original screws I’d definitely be realigning them now that they are apart. Put the door on the hinges, latch it closed. Shim to square. Like a car door but wooden. Haha.
