Someone help? Unknown registered owner from vehicle owned by dead family member. H |
ICBC can’t help? |

I have done this before, there is a process through ICBC for it. https://www.icbc.com/brochures/Pages...on-record.aspx The short version is you need to apply in writing to ICBC with an inquiry and pay a fee, then you have to send a registered mail document to the last known registered owner's address and hope it comes back undelivered or they agree to sign the paperwork. You will know who the person is when you're going to mail it out, so that might help you be like "Oh okay I know who they are!" It might seem like BS but have to see it from their perspective. The paperwork says the other person owns the vehicle right? You wouldn't want them to let someone else take your car away without your permission. |
Unfortunately none of the past history of the vehicle is known whatsoever. |
Should still be the same process... mechanics use it to take over abandoned cars at their shops where they have no idea about anything. |
was the vehicle fraudulently transferred out of his name? |

Because he’s my brother and we were like best friends we know everything about each other unfortunately I just never seemed to inquire with him who the actual registered owner was. |

Sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences |

To summarize: 1) your brother has been driving a car since 2005 that you know to be owned by somebody else, but you don't know who that person is? 2) there are plates on the car, but no insurance papers in the glovebox? If so, I believe you can go to autoplan and pay $18 for a duplicate registration which will confirm the registered owner of the vehicle and their address. If I am not understanding, then please correct me. -Mark |

My guess would be the car was never driven and most likely in storage. Quote:

most likely your brother bought the used vehicle from its previous owner, but never bother to register the vehicle under his name? And I guess he never had insurance on the vehicle? |
Have nothing to add in terms of what to do but just wanted to send my condolences regarding the loss of your brother |
I went through the ICBC process to get my hatch. It took about 6 months during covid. In my case when I sent the registered letter the guy actually showed up, and thankfully he signed it over. He could have made it difficult and tried to keep it, this is why you always get the car in your name before you put a bunch of money into it. I have cars here that are not in my name but I do have signed paperwork. Maybe your bro did this, just tucked the paperwork away somewhere. Have a look for it. |
