In Cantonese, the words for "red pocket" and "shitting yourself" sound similar but use slightly different tones. But yes, it's hard to differentiate if you're not familiar with the tones!

In the "Old Days" -- ie. pretty much since I moved to Vancouver as a kid in elementary school -- I think mainstream society more or less just refers to Chinese New Year as Chinese New Year / CNY, and nobody really give it too much additional thoughts.

In recent years, I know there has been a gradual shift towards calling it "Lunar New Year" instead of "Chinese New Year" because of inclusivity. But especially with this year, it really seems to me that people are going hardcore with LNY, and have pretty much abandoned the use of CNY.

I don't have a preference for one over and another, and I know LNY is technically more "correct" since it isn't just a Chinese celebration. But out of habit, I keep using CNY as sort of an automatic response.

It's a PITA and I'm sure people have judged me bcos of my continual use / slip of tongue to keep using CNY instead of LNY.

Such a PITA...

Happy Lunar New Year!

Hopefully, the Year of the Dragon will be a good year.

In case anyone is wondering, the Dragon is the most popular and powerful sign in the Chinese zodiac.

The dragon was the symbol of the Chinese emperor and imperial rule back in the day. Royalty, strength, and good luck.

I'm too CBC to understand the need to be first at the temple on CNY lol. Also, pretty sure the literal violence/aggressiveness exhibited by some people on new year's day isn't a good omen for the rest of the year, no?

bcrdukes 02-10-2024 09:12 AM

lol Badhobz please reply, hopefully not from police station and bloodied seat stain on your Ratrolla :lol

Wasn’t too bad wait for the temple today. Probably only waited like 30-40 minutes. Felt bad for all the people we were inconveniencing along Steveston highway but what can you do.

Saw a whole bunch of people parking on the side streets and walking in.
