DPReview is shutting down

I know the photography section here has been dead or very slow for the last while but I guess it's been slow all over the net since DPReview is getting shutdown

Amazon owns it and they don't want to keep it alive or sell it

It had been such a great resource over the years.. Decades

I was blown away by the news when I found out about it yesterday. Right from the time of my very first digital camera -- the now-ancient Canon Digital Rebel 300D, which is apparently 20 years old now -- DP Review was my go-to place for new camera previews and reviews. Every single digital camera that I have bought or avoided buying started with reading up on the review/preview articles at DP Review.

Digital photography has not been the hot sexy "in" thing in for the masses for quite some time now. So I can't say I am surprised Amazon is putting it up on the chopping block -- essentially it has fallen back into being the hobby / niche market that it was before.

With DP Review gone, I'm not even sure where I can go to for good quality review on digital photography products anymore...

Kinda bummed by this news - my dad and I went through their digital camera reviews while learning about them in the early-mid 2000s. Always find their content useful when I shopped for a new camera.

Good thing the guys on their YouTube channel found a new home over at PetaPixel.

Surprised they lasted as long as they did.. The era of the standalone high quality website ended like 10 years ago. The bigger ones can stick around for a bit, but everything else will be aggregated.

Get ready to get all your camera info from whacky youtubers and tick tock, and all discussion will be "hot takes" in comments and on reddit.

Yeah I've noticed theverge doing more camera n lens reviews and I'm like "ew" but to imagine tiktok n influencers taking over ugh

DPReview has been around forever so it's such a shame, ud think amazon would just allow it to keep being a niche thing, or sell it to a team of moderators or something

hopefully at least a few of the guys from the team start another site. there is still demand for this type of thing, but maybe just run a little more lean.

Might make more sense to make a youtube channel. In my (former) industry that's what Gamers Nexus did and they are very successful (the rest not so much but it can be done)

There's some room for a long format in depth channel, but not much.

Truth is most people just want a 5 minute video telling them what to do. Or really, 5 minutes might be too long.
