For $200 you’re probably not going to get much better than the ISP’s hardware

I've been happy with my TP-Link Archer AX55, but I haven't done anything too funky with it like in the old days.

What functions / features are you specifically looking for that are not currently provided by the modem from Shaw right now?

For how popular Netgear is and how long they've been in the game, my wifi mesh sucks ass.

I find that Netgear hasn't improved their product, unfortunately.

Most modern wireless routers can support around at least 30-50 wireless devices without a hitch.
If you're okay with your current Shaw router's features, you can just extend your wireless network with some access points. Most mesh routers can be configured to run in just access point mode.
I use the TP-Link Deco X60 myself, but we use Ubiquiti access points at work. Quote:

Even tri-band mesh routers with a dedicated wireless backhaul still suffers from bandwidth loss.

If you’re not on fiber, wireless mesh networks suck so much of the bandwidth just maintaining a connection I feel.
Hardwired access points only, if that’s not possible the only solution is to really just buy a more powerful router and to get somthing better than the current ISP offerings I’d say you have to spend a minimum of $400+
