I serve on two non-profit boards: one as an executive, and another as a committee member and advisor. Outside of that, I volunteer several hours a month supporting marketing initiatives for a non-profit/community service that teaches advanced driving techniques for new/young drivers. In addition, I support Mackenzie Health, Sick Kids Hospital, and BC Children's on their fundraising initiatives and help onboard ballers to participate and support the "Drive to Smile" campaigns for kids who really need a smile on their faces. And finally, I volunteer as a mentor to new grads entering the workforce with a focus on women in technology.

Otherwise, I'm standing in line at the food bank and eagerly waiting to collect my welfare cheque on Wednesdays.

the average volunteer does around 200-300 hours a year, so it's a decent commitment. and many do 500+.
Oh damn, that's cool.

Any stories?

we were mostly urban search not mountain search, but we did assist in mutual aid with the mountain rescue teams when necessary. i did get dropped in via helicopter a few times but never hung off one to do a longline rescue or anything crazy like that.

one of my highlights was being on task when we found this lady. it wasn't my group but we were all in the area when one of the groups stumbled upon her.

The young tech bros here who treat life as some sort of RPG with experience points could learn a lot from you and this post.

That's certainly one way to frame it!

I can't recall which thread it was, but a number of folks here said they come on to RS for mental therapy. Hey, if it works, then great!

I think whatever you decide to do post-retirement, it needs to be something fulfilling. Else, like many have said, you'd jump right back after some time.

I generally take inspiration from people I look up to.

Some went into philanthropy full time, some went into mentoring, some took their hobby to pro but they have that thing in common, it keeps them busy and they feel fulfilled.

I have been planning my retirement for a while now. And the idea is a coffee house where one comes to create. I'd have some photostudio space, full commercial kitchen, a coffee roasting shop and a studio to display/sell the work. Not planning to make any money out of it, but I like coffee, food and photography, it's to provide a place for people who share similar interest to create/experiment something new, especially the next generation of artists.

Sounds like a bunch of us have similar ideas. A joint venture in the making!
