: Charcoal VS. Propane

Which do you prefer? I'm a big fan of charcoal because I think the flavour is much better, but that's just me. If i'm in a hurry or i'm lazy, or I'm just doing something small, I usually just throw it on the gas grill, any other time, it's charcoal. Also, post any comments, reasons, etc.

Also, anyone think it's weird to have one bbq of each type?

Charcoal for sure, but it's a pain to maintain proper heat, and it dies down too quickly sometimes.

Most people do NOT know how to use propane barbecues (they leave the gas running while cooking food.. I even saw someone use a propane bbq with NO BRICKS - just cooking over the burning propane.. YUMMY!!!!!)

Charcoal is more portable, so you can bring it to the beach, etc. Propane is easier to manage, and more handy.

Charcoal gives it a better flavour though

Meh...all tastes the same to me...if you use lava rocks in your propane BBQ, then it's pretty similar.

i'd say it depends on how much you're bbqing and the temp outside...for just myself or like up to maybe...4 ppl, i shut it off or leave it really low...when it's a crowd, i leave it on cuz we are usually bbqing massive amounds of food :D

Try closing the lid, and letting it get really hot.. Lava Rock is used because it hold heat VERY well - WAY more than Charcoal... So really you're just wasting gas if you keep the flames on... Let the rocks get hot, they'll stay that way for a long time. If they cool down, stop cooking food, and let it heat up for 5-7 minutes again.

I'm still a little confused between the two types of bbq.

so let me get this straight.

Propane

PROS:
-heats up quicker
-lavarocks can hold the heat very well

CONS:
-propane w/ lavarocks cost more than charcoal

Charcoal

PROS:
-better taste from the charcoal

CONS:
-takes longer to heat up
-charcoals don't hold the heat very well
-hard to control heat

i'm a newb. :haha:

I'm deciding between which one to get. So far, it seems like the charcoal ones are going to be more of a hassle.

If you can get a BBQ with propane where it has provisions for you to use charcoal or lava rocks, that would be the best of both worlds. I would personally prefer charcoal however, a lot of people these days don't have the patience to get charcoal going. As for charcoal not holding heat in well, you should close the lid on your BBQ. It gets hot pretty fast but how often are you going to have an 8 hour BBQ?

the type of BBQs that I plan to have would be the type that lasts like 2-3 hrs in the backyard.
Pretty much just mini BBQ's at night every now and then. Nothing fancy and not going to have lot of ppl (4-6ppl).

I also don't want to spend a lot of $ on charcoal/propane since I will be having many mini BBQ's.
Propane grill has the extra ignition part, which could be $$(20?) to replace.

It seems like charcoal will be the cheaper choice, but propane is more fit for the type of BBQs that I want to have.

---------------------------------------------

BTW, does anyone know which grill would be easier to clean? Propane or charcoal?
Since lavarocks keep the heat better, wouldn't it mean I have to wait longer before I can pack up the propane grill?

Don't believe this nonsense about propane being gross, or shutting it off when cooking

1. Propane itself is non-toxic, colorless and odourless (The "smell" of propane is from an additive so humans can detect propane leaks)

2. The byproducts of complete propane combustion (which is what happens in a propane BBQ) are: CO2 and H20.
Of course, carbon dioxide and water are completely non-toxic, and odourless.

3. I have never seen my cousin, who is a red-seal chef turn off his propane when BBQing.

That being said, one of my future purchases will be a big green egg.

For the older grills which doesn't have even heat distribution lava rocks / ceramic plates were uses to even it out. However a lot of newer/high end grills with dual "H" burners + heat spreader on top makes it almost useless. I use to work for Rona... I knew my grilles once upon a time

btw, where do ppl dispose used charcoal after the bbq is done?

so far, I'm deciding between these grills:

Propane:
Weber Q 100 ($169.99 at Home Depot)

Charcoal
Weber Charcoal Smokey Joe ($44.99-$49.99)

but I think I have to buy a Chimney Starter and Charcoal Fuel Holders for the charcoal, so the prices are pretty even.

when i youtubed the weber Q 100, I could barely see any flames on the grill, so is the 8,500 BTU enough for chicken meat, and other tough meat?

How hot do you want your BBQ to be? A propane grill without lava rocks is fine if you're having small 2-3 hour BBQs and if you're not aiming to become the next Iron Chef. If your goal is to entertain a few friends over the weekend, throwing several patties, chicken wings or steaks on the grill, this is sufficient. Any hotter, your BBQ is going to be cut short and food easily overcooked. Your friends will hate you and never come back. :p Oh, and higher BTU does not equate to bigger flames. I'll let aznboi128 edumacate you on this BBQ shizzer.

How hot the temperature gets has nothing to do with lava rocks. It's all about the BTU output of your burner.

Even finding lava rocks these days is pretty difficult. The last time I used them was probably 15 years ago. They were notoriously bad for uneven heat distribution and flareups/grease absorption, they're old BBQ technology. Now it's all about heat diffuser design to keep even heat.

but without lava rocks, it means the temperature won't get very hot -__-.

As noted, lava rocks have nothing to do with how hot the BBQ gets. The whole purpose of them is to diffuse and even out the heat - instead of the flames directly heating the food, the rocks absorb the heat, spread it around, and then hold it longer, so it doesn't vary with the flame.

These days you see things like small ceramic bricks used for this.

I have this Napoleon portable that I got with AirMiles: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/2/OutdoorLiving/2/BBQsAccessories/GasBBQsPortable/PRD~0851673P/Napoleon%252BTravel%252BQ%252BPortable%252BPropane %252BBBQ.jsp?locale=en

and charcoal is cheaper than propane.

I would say that's not true.

One 20lb propane bottle fill costs $20 nowadays. I can get at least 4 months out of a propane bottle, grilling 3 times a week.

One 8kg bag of lump charcoal costs $10, and lasts for maybe a dozen uses or less.

I know charcoal briquettes are cheaper, but I would never use them. I do not want things like borax, sodium nitrate, limestone and parrafin (the ingredients of charcoal briquettes) anywhere near my food.

Lump charcoal is at least made completely from hardwood, no other additive shit.

It's definitely worth investing in the hose adapter that'll let you use the big propane tanks instead of those little, expensive, Coleman canisters.

I used to just buy those $50 grills at Costco, which only lasts a couple seasons, at the most. Usually the burner would warp and the heat spreader would completely rust through. Having bought a nice Weber charcoal for my parents' place. I figured they'd be a good choice for propane grilling on my apartment balcony.

I went and bought a Weber Q100, and I am impressed. It is a quality piece of grilling equipment. It's far more powerful at half power compared to the Costco special. It'll last a long time.

did you get the weber charcoal smokey joe for your parents?

If so, how does it compare with the Q 100 in terms of the following:

- time it takes to cook a basic beef patty

- easiness of maintaining and cleaning

- portability

- durability

btw, how much did you pay for the Q 100?

I believe it's the One-Touch 22" (http://www.johnstones.com/barbecues/weber/charcoal-barbecues/one-touch-gold-22-5.html) that I bought for my parents. It's hard to compare against the Q100, since one is propane and the other is charcoal. The One-touch charcoal grill can definitely get much hotter than the Q100. It's also a far bigger grill, so it's more suitable for parties. Cleaning is pretty easy for the one-touch. The ash-catcher helps quite a bit.

For an quick and easy way of firing up the charcoal, I recommend getting a chimney starter of some sort like the Weber Chimney Starter (http://www.johnstones.com/accessories/acc/catalog.php?id=585). No lighter fluid required. Just fill it up with charcoal, jam some paper under it and light it. In a few minutes you can pour out your red, hot coals.

I do prefer the added flavor of charcoal, but the Q100 is perfect for regular, everyday grilling, especially if you live in an apartment, like I do. I probably use it 3-5 times a week. Cleaning is as easy as taking the bbq brush to the grill a few times. Grease drips into a removable tray.

Having gone through several BBQs, I am now part of the Weber cult. Their BBQs are great quailty, and get the job done nicely.

BTW, I paid $190 for the Weber. It wasn't on sale, but I needed a grill.

There are a lot of grills that are better value than a weber. You pay a lot for the "weber" name.

I wasn't impressed with my uncle's Weber. I found the heat not as even as I would have expected a weber to be. And I'm not a fan of the cast aluminum bodies of their lower end lines, and if I'd spend the money on their full stainless steel lines I'd rather step up to a Jackson Grill or a Lynx Grill. Not only do I think Jacksons are better than Webers, but they're built in Duncan BC to boot.

I can sell you the versa 75 made by Jackons grills. I'm the distributor for them =)

I'm really happy with my Napoleon I just got it's a great bbq and top of the line but it's a whole lotta cash. The way I look at it is I may as well spend the cash now and it will last me for the rest of my life basically

Taste the meat not the heat. Use propane.

The most important part of BBQ is the person manning it. We had an elcheapo $200 gill from Zellers for over 10 years and I made burgers, steaks, and smoked ribs and they all turned great. We now have a $500 Charbroil grill and it is better but not $300 better.

Also you don't need to turn of the propane when cooking. If I did that there would be no way I could cook 250 plus 1/4 burgers in 4 hours.

There are a lot of grills that are better value than a weber. You pay a lot for the "weber" name.

Broil mate or broil king seems to be quite decent for the price.under 250 dollars on sale i believe. It cooks as well as a 900$ weber. Cleaning your grill and protecting it from outdoor weather when not using is as important as paying premium price for expensive stuff

Yeah Napeoleon's Prestige series are nice. I just bought the Amana I pictured on the other page and I'm happy with it. It was pretty good value for the price, I specifically wanted heavy cast iron grates and the IR rotisserie burner, which not a lot of other grills in the price range ($700) had.

The only thing I don't like about the prestige is it
came with SS grates, I'm going to get cast but just pisses me
Off after spending $900 on a top of the line unit

Charcoal is dope. Not a lot of fire. Propane burns BBQ or whatever your cooking pretty fast.

How much are you paying?

I usually run the tank empty and head down the street (5 minute drive) for a refill. On average, I'm paying $14/$15 for a refill. Lost I've paid is $13 and the most I've paid is $16. I think for a while, they were charging a flat-rate $13 refill too!

I think petro charges about $25+taxes for a cylinder exchange.

Wow. I don't do the cylinder exchange. I simply get my cylinder refilled. Hurray for being cheap and Chinese. :(

I did a refill last week, it was like $19.95 or something like that. I only go to them because they're the closest to my house.

Oh, and you're on the Island so limited choices. I'm lucky that Superstore is literally a 5 minute drive away from my house, otherwise I'm stuck with Petro Canada as well. :(

When you do a tank exchange check the date stamped on it. Last tank exchange I did I got shafted. One year after getting it, it had already expired obviously someone forgot to restamp a new date on it.

I refill and avoid exchanges. The only time I exchange tank is when the tank is outdated and nobody will fill it (against the law). I take the outdated tank to Home Depot and carefully pick out the newest ones. In fact, I wanted a spare tank, so I went to the Burnaby recycling depot and picked up one that was thrown out and exchanged it for one that was brand new at Home Depot, LOL. The people at Home depot don't know any better or care. In North Burnaby, there aren't any propane places left. I used to go to the gas station by the Lake City Skytrain Station, but they're gone. The only place left is the Mohawk on Canada Way and Smithe. I forgot about Superstore on Rupert. They have the best price by far. Thanks for the reminder, bcrdukes.

This thread is great, I have two questions. When cooking a beef patty/steak which do you prefer, charcoal or propane? Next question, whenever I cook patties on a propane grill they always end up turning into a ballon and popping but staying in a deformed shape. And I think its on low heat to. What can I do to stop it?

Cook on high heat and make a indentation in the middle so the patty is a concave shape before you cook it. That way it won't balloon.

AKA, don't buy pre-made patties or those dumb pattie maker contraptions.
Form a ball, then squish down by hand.

I find it too crunchy, and it leaves black marks all over my teeth...
