The Progression of the mspeedP5 Turbo

I am contemplating taking the plunge and going forced induction. I have the opportunity to pick up a used Mental Addiction Motorsports Street Sleeper Kit at a fairly decent price. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with their products and has any feedback. The details of the sale are as follows:
Unfortunately, it's time for me to throw in the towel. Long story short: I've decided that I no longer have the passion and the commitment to continue modifying my car extensively. There is nothing wrong with the kit. It is a fantastic kit and is 100% complete. I'm just not 100% there.
This kit retailed for $4395 USD. I'm selling it for $3500 CDN + shipping if applicable.
Included is the following:
GT28RS
Tial 38mm Wastegate
Greddy Type S BOV
FMIC
MPI Tuner + Turbo Module
Plumbing + Miscellaneous parts
I ran this kit for 4 months and put on less than 8,000 KM. Beau (the manufacturer) from Mental Addiction Motorsports has amazing customer service and will continue to honour his warranty on the kit.
I'd prefer to sell and see this kit run in Vancouver as it hasn't really had it's chance to shine. However, I'll be posting an ad on the Toronto and US boards within the next couple weeks to increase exposure.
Let me know if you have any questions. This is a large investment (at a huge discount) and I don't want a buyer to walk into this blind. I'm local (to Vancouver), so we can meet up and discuss any concerns you might have.
More details on the kit are here:
Mental Addiction Motorsports (http://mentaladdictionmotorsports.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=23_37&products_id=206)
Any opinions/feedback etc appreciated.

i would say its a good deal for the parts as every thing is made for a direct bolt on i would asume. my only concern is seeing the parts in person to see the true condtion of them, but 3500 cnd not a bad price. considering the gt28rs with out coatings runs around the 1000 US mark new.
yeah gt28rs goes for 1100 us on kinetics site... so definately a good deal...
I cant say ive heard of "mpi tuner + turbo module before" but seeings how there is no fmu (very very good thing) this looks to be your fuel controll... id research that and see how well you like it...
but the rest of the kit looks pretty damn nice... that mani provided its not cheaply made should be really good... looks like a "full race" manifold and they make some of the best in the business
my final thoughts is this looks like it would be a great kit for your car... perfect turbo size and a complete kit that has allready been installed on the same car plsu getting it used means you get it at a discount...
not sure how skookum the stock bottom end is though

Good deal, the MPI is a bit of a quirky thing to get tuned properly. But other than that, a really good deal.
Of course, our engine's are shit for high boost, so unless you go forged, don't plan on running higher than 7-8psi. Thankfully I have forged internals and am running around 10-12psi right now. Mucho fun... but once you start boosing, hard to go back
Just do it

I'm thinking of going turbo too, so I have to encourage you not to do this so I never have to be in the same class as you racing. :)

$3500 seems a little much to me. But if it' basicly a brand new kit then go for it. I'm sure you could piece a kit together for cheaper though. If you're only going to be able to keep boost @ 6-8 psi then there's really no need for that turbo, buy a used mitsu turbo like a t25, or better yet a 14b, heck you can pic up a new evoIII 16g for about $600 and It'll be more than you'll ever need if you plan on keeping the internals stock. Spend the extra money you save on a better fuel system and management than what is offered in the kit and you'll be able to make more boost(and power of course) in the long run, or an safc and larger diameter downpipe and exhaust etc. etc. The kit has wicked parts but I think you could get the same performance or better for afew hundred less. Just my opinion, not that it even counts...

Do it Mark!!! Just make sure that there is no play in the turbine and that it spins smoothly, past that Id say snatch it up ASAP.

Psssst, get a good kit. I started out saying I was only going to stay in the 6-8psi range. Now im up in the 10-12psi and next year should be closer to 16-18psi. Boost is evil

the MPI turbo module is a voltage clamp, which under boost interrupts the factory ECU to prevent it from pulling fuel under boost.

Um, its like 300 in parts to get the gaskets and such to rebuild a turbo..... you are looking at about 500 taxes in to rebuild a turbo unless you want to risk doing it yourself and blowing it up cause it wasn't aligned properly ;)

You're probably right, I had my turbo rebuilt when I bought my kit, I thought it was only $300 to rebuild it, but I can't really remember for sure - so it was probably more, that was a long time and many $$$ ago....

I'm thinking about a clutch upgrade (since I'll be ripping out my tranny) and I'm wondering what others experiences have been with aftermarket clutches. As most of you know, I mainly autocross with my car, but I did participate in the Alberni drags this summer, so I shouldn't rule out the occasional drag race in the future.
Just looking for comments/suggestions/recommendations.

Spec - Stage II+

Well the answer to that is I have all winter to do that, along with the MSP LSD and a new clutch(which I'm still deciding on). In the meantime, the car has been winterized. CF hood is in my living room, 17's are off, mask is on and the wax is thick!

Looks like a Tial 38mm to me. The 40mm uses the 4 bolt flanges.
Nice setup though man. What turbo is it?
I'm using a Spec stage III in my Volvo. My car uses a dual mass flywheel, so the clutch disc is unsprung. It is also a 6 puck so it took a while to get used to, especially in stop & go traffic. Other than that, it's got a nice light pedal feel and quick engagement.

Just a few updates...
First off, I upgraded the mounting tabs on the MAM Intercooler, the one and only tab that was on there was a bit wimpy for my likeing, so I removed it and had 2 welded on to spread the load out a bit before I installed it...
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0053copy.jpg
In that pic you can also see I painted my A-pod pillar to match the factory grey colour of the interior trim. Thanks to Paul (BIGWOOFER) for helping out with the colour code info... ;D It looks great with the Auto Meter Ultra-Lite Oil Pressure and Boost Gauges.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0086.jpg
On a side note, I had an opportunity to pick up a red top Optima cheap, so it went in today...
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=64547
Having issues with the negative terminal tho'. Looking into something better than what I'm using now.
I also installed the Vacuum block for the turbo install today. I just cut the hose and spread it apart to fit the block in. I plan on actually shortening the hose to make it fit better later on. At this point I only have my boost gauge connected to it and it is doing a stellar job of showing me vacuum readings! ;D I can hardly wait for the BOOOOOST readings! I'd also like to find something better than those big unsightly hoser clamps that are on there now... ;D
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0131copy.jpg
I also picked up a bung today to have welded onto my oil pan for the oil return line. I'll just cap it until I do the turbo install...
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0140copy.jpg
I put together a fitting for my oil supply line that would also accomodate the pressure gauge. This did eliminate the OEM low oil pressure sending unit tho'. Again, I capped off the oil supply fitting until the turbo is installed...
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=63623
Sorry about the pic links... kinda have them spread out over a few hosts... :crazy2:

make sure you mount that drain fitting as high up as possible and make it the straight shot into the pan as possible.
if you mount it low in the pan, you could have back up issues and end up killing the seals in the turbo prematurely.
You mention the bypass of your oil pressure sending unit? (the factory one). Is there not enough room to install this back in line with your oil feed tee?
I would suggest figuring out a way to do this. I assume you drive this on a daily basis. If you dont have an idiot light on your dash that goes off in the event you lose oil and you dont have a oilpressure gauge, it could some major damage to the car/motor.

This is where the return bung is going to be located, just below the flange on the pan.
The idiot light isn't an issue as I have the oil pressure gauge.

I'm getting my Mazdaspeed LSD transaxle and SPEC Stage II+ clutch installed next week and I was thinking that I should treat the tranny to something other than your everyday 75W-90. Any recommendations and suggestions where to purchase in the Nanaimo area?
what is the requirment for protege tranny and mazdaspeed LSD? (clutch type or gear type?)
if it is clutch type, mostly you will need to add lsd modifier if you use normal gear oil, or you can get the gear oil that is designed for with LSD
for gear type, you only need gear oil, that's all
for me, i will try the motul GEAR FF for clutch type lsd tranny
motul MOTYLGEAR 75W-90 for gear type lsd tranny
:)

I ordered some Amsoil MTF but it didn't arrive in time for me to use at the swap. It was here when I got back home though so I'll probably change it out this weekend.
Also, I discovered a leaking front strut while the car was up on the hoist and while explaining some rough idle symptoms to my tech I find out that the EGR sensor is probably in need of replacement. (Apparently this is not uncommon with the '02 FS-DE engine.) I also found out that I should be thinking about replacing my timing belt (Recommended at 90,000K).
Damn, the way things are going I may not be able to race until June! :(

Unfortunately this is a common occurance with these cars so it's gonna have to go to the shop to get done... :(

Well it's been a long 7 months (give or take a week) of looking at this sucker begging to be installed in my car. I'm now less than a week away. Today I'm taking my final inventory before I pack everything up for the trip to $$$$$$$$ Friday morning to finally bring this project to completion. Everything seems to be here except for the LSD, clutch, pusher fan, FMIC and gauges, which are all installed.
I can hardly wait! :D :D :D

Is that a grease pit in your house?
mspeedP5
04-11-2006, 08:13 PM
Yup! My garage is actually built over a workshop in the basement and there is a sliding panel in the floor that opens up into it below. There is a raised platform in the basement shop with a ladder going up to the garage that puts me right at working height for the underside of the car.
The reason I bought this place was for the garage. It just happened to have a 2000 sq. ft. house attached to it! :D
Edit: If you look at the picture on page 2 of this thread of the planned location of my oil return line, it was taken standing on the platform underneath my car...

Well here are some pics of the install process at the shop... (my apologies for the variety of picture sizes. Photobucket automatically resizes them...)
First thing was to remove the oil pan and prep it for installation of the bung for the oil return line.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0232.jpg
Then it was turned over to Mike for welding it in. Nice job!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/Dcp_0239.jpg
While the oil pan was being welded, out came the header to make room for the new manifold, turbo and downpipe.

We had to remove the front passenger side tow hook, grind off a flange and reweld the seam to accomodate this one section of piping for the intercooler. All the other sections fit together pretty well.

My tranny has been making some weird noises (only in reverse) so I thought I'd fix up my original tranny that has been sitting in my basement. First thing was to get the newly revised torsen-style LSD from Mazda Motorsports who offer racer discounts for those that qualify.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/LSD/Untitled-3.jpg
There is an inherent problem with these LSDiff's when used in higher horsepower applications than stock. They break as seen here. (The circles indicate where the factory spot welds were in this case.)
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/LSD/unweldedoem_lsd_broke.jpg
The solution is to have the housing welded and this is what I have done.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/mspeedP5/LSD/Untitled-2-6.jpg
The tranny should be assembled by the weekend and maybe the swap will happen on Saturday. :)

Are there any tell-tale signs to look for that would indicate detonation has occurred? I was running my car really hard up the Alberni hump with sustained periods of WOT and full boost when it started to make a strange metallic noise like I'd never heard before, (kind of like a rattling of small pebbles in a tin can). I had trouble determining where it was coming from but my son who was riding with me said it was definitely behind the footwell/firewall. I immediately backed off and just cruised for a bit and everything appeared normal, gauges all good, sounded fine etc. I tried a couple of short bursts of WOT and did not have a repeat of the noise. Car pulled strong and felt normal. When I got the car home I looked around under the hood, under the car and all seems intact. Maybe it's my tranny telling me something??? It has been making some noise, but only in reverse gear... so far. :(

Check the plugs. It's possible that you were driving for a bit and everything got sort of heat soaked and caused it to get too hot.

Mark, check the plugs out. If I recall correctly, I set your timing with a boost retard as well. It might be time for a spark plug change. Give me a shout at the shop.

You need to go a heat range or 2 colder (3 threads of carbon is the rule I abide by) , but the plugs look half decent.

Mark,
Are you still running the stock intake manifold / butterfly valves. Not sure if your car was under the recall the P5's had. On my 2003.5 the butterfly valves on the top intake runners close at about 4500rpm. For a period of time Mazda had them attached by screws (as opposed to being revitted), which of course worked loose over a period of time and would get sucked into the cylinders. Generally they are small enough to go out the exhaust valve, although with a turbo I do not know if this would be possible .....

My research on the Mazda forums was quite positive for these coilovers in my application. I'm buying them from a guy in Toronto who is parting out his car before selling it and there is only 1500 km on these. They retail for approx $1050US and I'm getting them for $700CA. I'm pretty happy with that.:)

Ray, I can't find the Mazdaspeed setup you are referring to. Any more info?
for the mazdaspeed setup, u can only get it in here, https://www.mazdamotorsports.com/
you have to register to be member and u should be qualify for it (they need u to submit autox/road racing/drag result)
for more information for the mazdaspeed coilover, u need to email them after u became a member because when i check on their website, they didn't show as much information about the coilover kit anymore...

02-06-2009, 05:24 AM
Realistically I'm thinking the Summer Series. Might be ready sooner but we'll see. I still don't have any rubber. Waiting for my rims and coils to arrive and then I have to do some measuring. Hoping to squeeze some 245's into my wheel wells. Also have the fuel system to install and then tuning as well.
for my itr, 235 is really tight fit already (all around, with right camber setting, right offset for wheels) for 245, i guess you have to pull fender on your P5 or run fender flares/wide fenders on your P5...
well pull fender would be cheaper but you may have to repaint the fenders tho because it may crack the paint...:(
btw, how much do you pay for the BC coilover? take me for a ride when you come out for autox, i would like to see how it goes :)

I have a welded revised edition LSD in a rebuilt tranny sitting in my garage that is going to go in as soon as my new Stage III+ SPEC clutch arrives.
