Hello,
Was just reading the "UBC Med Guidance" thread, and as SIR_vfung said, I too did not expect there to be quite a few MD students on RS.
So, I'm curious to see if we have any other health professionals out there. I know of a few pharmacy students and a few med students... I don't know of any dentistry students on RS or Nursing, etc. Anyhow, If I left your name out, just add it on. Or if i left a category out, just add it on. Let's start building the RS medical community... heh
Anyhow, here we go. Let's make a running list. I'm sure a few of you would be interested in knowing anyhow.

Like Homer said, "A little from Column A, a little from Column B" ;)
You make decent money as a doc, but the lifestyle can be quite stressful. All the people I know and went to school with are in it to help people, including myself.
haha cool thread, hope i can add myself to a list soon!

I thought once you go into med, you have to revoke your possibility of being a pharmacist. i.e. you can't be both...

Yep to all. I know them from the IHHS course I took at St. Paul's. We had a team called "Social Pharmers" LOL. I see Anoop every now and then. He got me into doing the C.H.I.U.S. thing at the DCHC. And yes, big guy Scott.. tell him that I've been hooked on soy nuts because of him LOL. Ali-Reza, Rocky (I did the HealthCare Team Challenge 2005 and was on his team) yeup.. if you mention young, Chinese social worker, they'll know me... there's not many out there :p

Not quite. The rule is that you can't hold two professional licenses at the same time. As you know, the school faculties are separate entities from the licensing college. One gives you the degree, the other gives you the license, so getting a degree doesn't equal getting licensed. Cuz I'm still a student, I can work as an RPh up til the day I get licensed as a doctor.

I agree, that's a *really* good idea. I had friends who worked on the weekends as pharmacists during the first few years of med school (when you actually have time on the weekends for that sort of thing), and it helped them a lot with finances.

I think he's referring to the Health Administration program (MHA). I did this program before entering med at UBC and worked at the Fraser Health Authority doing policy work...it's definitely a growing field and the new program at UBC makes it convenient for more older people (ie. doctors/nurses) already working to complete the MHA as it is an executive style program (go to school 1 weekend/month for 2 years).
Here's more info on the program: LINK (http://www.healthcare.ubc.ca/MHA_Program/index.html)
Garett92Z
01-14-2006, 11:41 AM
No, sorry I'm not part of the MHA @ UBC. I have a strong interest in health policy, and so my course focus in my undergrad surrounds that. I'm soon to graduate, so will be off to a law school that specializes in health law.
Most universities offer a few courses on health policy, health law, health informatics etc. Take one or two and see if you like it :)
What have I learned about healthcare? That's a huge question, but you learn about many things: duty of care, informed consent, therapeutic privaledge, Canada Health Act, Health as a human right?, ethical theories regarding health, euthenasia and other moral dilemmas, doctor/patient relationship throughout history etc.
In terms of the legal realm, there is a lot to know:
fiduciary responsibility, negligence, vicarious liability, assault and battery (yes, these are related to health!), individual autonomy, sections of the charter relating to health (particular s.7, s.15, s.8)
A good start is a browse through the prologue of the Canada Health Act, and then get a good book on the current environment in health.
http://www.canadiansocialresearch.net/health.htm
is also a good place to learn.

Also, Timothy Caulfield is a leading author on Health Policy in Canada. I believe he has a new book out regarding this. Check him out, he's from the U of Alberta

Yes it is. In my work as a forensic transition worker, we get forensic clients, who have been found "not guilty for reason of mental disorder." Offences range from theft and vandalism, all the way up to manslaughter and murder. However, out of all the different clients i've worked with, these ones seem to be the most motivated. Its really refreshing to see people improve, progress and get healthier, to the point where they can live on their own in the community.
The wait lists are so long for supportive housing however, its hard to see clients kneecapped like that when they've worked so hard towards their goals. The government has just announced that those receiving disability can now earn $500 instead of $400 on top of their disability benefits. So that should be of some help to them.

You know what i just realized? You know those threads where people post up odd medical problems, and then everyone tells them "what the hell are you doing on RS? Go see a doctor!"
Sooner or later, RS could actually become a decent source of medical info :)

Be sure to also visit the newly opened 'Healthcare forum' too, guys/gals
RS opened up the 'Healthcare forum' (http://www.revscene.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=269) based upon the discovery of so many RS healthcare students from this thread... and seeing the need for it stirring up from the 'Sports & Recreation' forum.
Afterall, its better that RS members hear suggestions/opinions from students, potentially working in healthcare, rather than hearsay :)

^ it used to be partnership with colleges around the province so that students would actually learn their clincal skills outside UBC. Only hassle was that it was a random pick and you could be sent to Prince George. But they opened up a new option where you can stay at the campus for all 4 years. That's why you probably never heard of it, and the fact that it's a tiny program.

some of the medical advice on the boards sometimes are questionable so it's relieving to know there are some experts in the field.
hey, so pharmacists, who works in the hospitals? i'm at SMH
and another other practices, anyone at good ol' surrey?
Starting at Burnaby Hospital in May.. as a pharmacy student technician! Woot...

Is the dental hygiene program new at UBC? Haven't heard of it before until now... We learn something new everyday :)
The grad convo for pharmacy and dental hygiene are actually held together.

eh? I thought our grad convo was with Dentistry...not dental hygiene? What the?
And fille, do you know a hospital pharmacist called Anya? I'm not sure if she works at SMH, but I know she's from surrey... it's a long shot
Edit: Fille - I'm not working for the hospitals, i'm working for Safeway come July...

Hey What_the?
no the name Anya does not sound familiar so she probably works at another hospital. i'm still considered new so i have not yet had the chance to network through hospitals yet.
ahhh Safeway. i did my 4th year rotation there and it was great. but then all community pharmacies are basically the same.
hey, once drug reps start coming to visit you better RSVP me to all the drug dinners you get invited to! drug reps aren't allowed to come visit the hospital pharmacies :(

im a future kinesiologist, not a physiologist though. does that get to be on the list?
hahahaha, can i be the first kinesiologist?
What_the?
03-31-2008, 01:16 AM
Yea sure you can be our first kinesiologist. The list is not meant to be restrictive, it's more for people's information, and just to keep track... that's all
btw, what's do kinesiologists do? i'm not very familiar with them..
Achiam - when you say Rxer, do you mean pharmacist?

^^im heading more towards the rehabilitation path right now.
but of course theres sports medicine, professional team trainer, physiotherapy, gym teacher. the list goes on as to job descriptions and environments.
basic way of putting it is a higher step of a personal fitness trainer since a lot of human kinetic courses require a lot of science when it comes to physiology, biomechanic etc...
aside from the sport type jobs, you can go in the nutritional path as well. theres a huge range of jobs and direction you can go in.
but i really only want to be a rehab kinesiologist for a few years before i go back to school for a occupational therapist degree.
Hm, I don't know if it really counts because it doesn't seem like you are in the professional school yet =p

well from what I gather he's a kinesiologist right now, but wanting to go back to school for OT. So i'd assume he falls under the title of a kinesiologist right now

For those people in pharmacy, isn't there a difference between a pharmacist and a pharmacy tech?
What_the?
07-08-2008, 11:59 PM
yep
Pharmacist = UBC Education (4 years + 1 year of undergrad)
-Responsibility and liability rest on their shoulders
-Responsible for final check of prescriptions before they're given to anyone
-Deals with drug related problems and assesses appropriate drug use in collaboration with other health care professionals... Can make recommendations and give advice to people
Pharmacy Technician = couple months program at a college, or no training sometimes
-Does technical functions within a pharmacy (i.e. counting)
-Cannot make recommendations or give advice
-Cannot take verbal prescriptions and discuss drug therapy with doctors

So, I'm sure most of you guys working in healthcare in BC got that Email from your health authority CEO regarding consolidiation.
Any news?
I just transfered from the clinical lab to lab information systems. I might switch back to clinical if things start to look bad.
