Well the snow is starting to fall and I can't wait to get some fantastic snowboarding/skiing pictures this month.
Let’s start of the thread with Chun’s picture

Absolute fluke that it turned out like this. I can post the original too but it's not far off (other than the dodging and border I did in PS).

To be honest, the trick itself was not a trick, rather a glorified landing on his ass :lol
Mananetwork: The reason why I did it was to somewhat bring out the focus of the picture since he was wearing white... any ideas how to do it? I couldn't think of anything!

lol...you are so stereo-typical. what defines a sport? I personally think cheerleading is a type of sport. There's a LOT of team work, trust, physical endurance, strength, flexibility, and much more.
And I guess you wouldn't want to see the other photos either then. All photos include male and female athletes.:o

I don'tk now if any of you shoot indoor sports but it's so damn hard getting the WB right. I tried custom-WB, tungesten with some WB adjustment, setting the kelvin value directly, and even auto! yet I still can't get consistent WB output from the camera.... urgh.

any pointers on getting the right WB under cycling gym lighting?'
to my eyes and on my monitor, shot #4 is the most "accurate" in terms of colors, and that was right at tip-off, at the center of the gym where lighting is perfectly balanced from all angles. Unfortunately as the players move around the court and lighting changes, the WB goes all over the place, as you can see.

Shoot RAW and then you can adjust the WB individually on each shot when processing.

well I'm not a pro, but I'll tell you what I've learned.
The general rule of thumb for a "good" basketball shot is to have the following in your frame:
- ball
- faces
- some kind of action (going up for a shot, rebound, steal, etc)
it's hard to have all 3 at the right moment but that comes with practice, and it's something I'm always working on as well to make my stuff better.
you want to shoot very tight, meaning you want to fill your frame with the players as much as you can, and if you ever crop your shots later on, crop even tighter. I think you got the idea right from the shots you've posted so that's a good start. This could change, though, depending on your style and how the picture is going to be used. Some editors might want full-body shots but some might just want the faces to be clear and emotion-filled.
also, if you crop, don't cut off the limbs at the joint (elbow, wrist, ankle, knee, etc) because that'll make the players look disproportioned and odd-looking.
some of your shots seem blurry and soft, I'm guessing it's either because
a) your shutterspeed is too low, I try to do 1/400s as much as I can but if it's too dark I'll go down to 1/320s, but no less. For highschool you might get away with 1/250s cuz the players don't move as fast, just try and experiement with the speeds and you'll know. Bump up your ISO to 1600 to get your shutterspeed up and open up the lens to the widest setting possible to get as much light in as you can
b) you pan with your camera too quickly. try to follow the players using the center focusing point and time your shots without making any rapid movements with your arms.
setting wise, AI-Servo is pretty much a given, if your camera allows, seperate your AE from your AF, so you AF with your thumb and AE (taking a shot) with your finger, that way you can quickly focus then recompose, and keep the focus point in the same spot with out having the camera re-AF again when you want to take a shot.
so yeah, there's lots more, but these are just the general stuff. again, these are "guidelines", and some shots can work great without following these "rules", just as how some shots can work without complying to the "1/3rd rule". ;)

try sitting, don't stand. you can make the players look taller and make it seem like they're jumping higher by sitting down and shooting upwards.

no, leave it in AF, but set it to AI-servo and use Custom Function to seperate your AE and AF. I don't know how you'd do that with an XT.

I tried from the baseline, corner of base and sideline, from center, and from the sidelines. I didn't have much space on the sidelines or baselines due to the gym size and seating...more of my pictures were from the corner or the center.
Overall, I think I did okay.. shoot about 200~ and come out with 50~ that I like, not a bad ratio.

as if
we won the first game, then had to play a 20 minute period after that as the third game and it was tied 1 - 1 and we were suppose to go into a 5 minute overtime but the icekeeper wouldnt allow it so we went into a shoot out right away, and i stopped 1 goal and let one in. dspirit79
04-12-2007, 09:44 PM
Kwazy: I'm not fond of the editing of the biking pictures. That is just a personal opinion. I understand that you and Jordan both prefer the very high contrast and darker picture; it's just not my cup of tea. The angles are neat and engaging, but the images overall seem... forced... Good concept, execution needs a little work... JMHO
Mugen: I also like the second photo the most out of the set. It has feeling to it. The depth of the photo really add to it.

Sorry for the late reply.
No worries, critique is always a good thing to learn from. I actually don't prefer the high contrast/darker picture (as much) as Jordan, but since we were shooting at night (which is ...like 95% of the time when we go out and take pictures) I wanted to emphasize the darkness and draw the attention of the viewer to the biker. Thanks for the opinion though, can't please everyone right?
As for the angles....a lot of hit and miss, a lot just holding it arms length away and praying he doesn't hit me =p. I don't get what you mean by the images seeming forced though, could you explain that more?

It means you fire the flash multiple times during exposure. Most of the higher end ones should be able to do it. My Sony/Minolta flash can do 40x per second. Useful when dogs fly in the darkness of your room: :p

Generally I would totally agree with that, the only reason I have strayed away from that, is that my buddy isn't a pro rider, and the jumps we build/find aren't nearly as big as the ones from redbull or in any magazine. The first shot was more of a test, I hadn't tried any thin DOF shots with boarding and wanted to see how the 85 1.8 tracked.
The second shot was more about framing him in the middle of the power lines, that ridge is the take off point, and the landing was pretty much where I was standing haha, I had to dive to the side as I wasn't expecting him to take it with so much speed the first time.

So..rollerderby gone and passed.
The arena was soooo dark! I was also quite restricted as to where I could set up a flash/position myself...sigh.
The important thing wasn't for me to shoot rollerderby, but rather VDL's dodgeball games during the intermissions. Did try to shoot some of it though.
Their photographer had two big alienbee strobes aimed towards the ceiling [it was like.. reflective foil]. His stuff is here (http://www.rollergirl.ca/gallery/TCRG_Riot_Girls_VS_Bad_Reputations_Season_3_Game_1 ?page=1), so much better, he just overpowered the crappy lighting.

First intermission. Static placing of the flash did not do me much good as it would get blocked from time to time [people reffing/retrieving balls]. That and I couldn't figure out a good angle since the "court" was large and people were not always close by.

Intermission over, back to the rollerderby.
Shot with my wide instead, wanted to do switch it up.

Thanks.
Local games are usually held at Kerrisdale Arena, but they play at different places too.
Check out their site if you're interested. :)
