Ok, so I've been going out and practising some street photography lately...what do you guys think?
The Main & Broadway area:
This girl was looking into my lens so I snapped her:

Main & Hastings:
I found it somewhat ironic that there was a paper with "1-800-LOVE-GOD" printed on it right next to a used hypodermic needle drop box with "Make it Your Gig to Return Your Rig" written on it.

Senna, you ever had any close calls as in someone trying to jump you / steal your equipment? Just wondering. It's not the safest area, I would assume...
PS. Nice shots :)

Not really...during daylight hours, no one will bother you. I've noticed people eyeballing my equipment, but no one has tried to take it....so far. I never go alone....always go with someone.

What do you say when someone notices you taking their picture and taking pictures of their 'home' that happens to be the street?

Thanks!
I used the Minolta 17-35mm f2.8, 50mm f3.5 macro, 70-200 f4, 200mm f2.8 APO. I also used my Leica with the 35mm f1.4 & 90mm f2.8.

Nothing. I've never been confronted before. Some people will not want their picture taken, but many actually will pose, or insist that you take their picture.

No. The dog, owner and I were on public property. If you are on public property, there is nothing that can stop you from taking anyone or anything. Of course ethically, things may be different.

Two shots from last Sunday. The 'LOOK' sign on the street seems to reinforce how society seems to 'look' the other way regarding the less fortunate.
The expression of longing on the girl that is sitting while she looks at the girl standing speaks volumes....she (sitting) has almost nothing while the other is wearing designer jeans, has an iPod, and has been shopping. She totally ignored the girl sitting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Senna4ever/Street/PICT2370.jpg
I wanted a shot that reinforces the way society tends to ignore the poor.

That last shot is amazing. I love how you have the contrast of the LOOK + cars moving around unoticing the poor lady in the corner + RBC Bank in the back (intentionally or not)... Just great.

Didn't want to create a new thread so I'll just continue here.
Practicing being inconspicuous and getting pictures from down low with my wide.
I wrapped the strap around my hand twice, let my hands down and turn it backwards while I'm walking and just click away.

Nice street photography Senna! I find it tricky with my Canon white tele! I would be interested in a street photography prime lens. What would everyone suggest on full-frame? 85mm 1.8? 135 F2 L?

Use a wide and get right in front of people. Maybe a 24mm or 30mm
Don't hide behind a big telephoto lens. :P

i absolutely love my 85 1.8 on FF... such a great lens for the money. that and a 35 f2 would be a great combo that wont break the bank or draw too much attention IMO.

Get close to your subject/s. Anything from 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm would be ideal. Don't be a sniper from across the street...get close, even engage your subjects in conversation. Don't use a big SLR if possible. I find using my Leica with the 35mm f1.4 the ideal set-up. It's small, quiet and unobtrusive.
Some with my Leica M6 titanium, 35mm f1.4:

I have no clue...I'd have to look in the EXIF, and this file is buried somewhere in my back-up HD. I'll see if I can find it.
don't know if this counts, but i was snapping in the passenger's seat on the weekend:

I just got back from San Diego so I'm still processing photos. But here are 2 photos of very different photographers.
I had to take a photo of this guy since I found him quite amusing. Nice suit and kung fu pose.

I was at the Wild Animal Park shooting photos of the elephants and ran into this guy. Chatted with him a bit about gear. He's using a Nikon D300 and a 600mm manual focus lens in this shot. He's also has another Nikon D300 with a 300mm lens around his neck as backup. There's another Nikon D200 in his bag as backup. The stuff weighs a ton but he said once he sees his photos, its all worth it.
