A Japanese guy runs this hotdog stand at Burrard & Smythe. He has some interesting twists, Japanese style. I had the 'Oroshi' which had grated daikon radish and was garnished with ponzu sauce. It a awesome. Then I had the 'Terimayo' which had teriyaki sauce with Japanese mayo, garnished with nori strips. This was awesome also.

Apparently, Ice Cube is a regular when in Vancouver.

Looks good

Kinda pricey for a hot dog

In TO there are hot dog vendors that sell smokies for 1.50 a pop. Pretty good deal

Just tried this on Sunday afternoon; it was pretty good! way better than normal hot dogs. It has a spice of Japanese toppings you can say.

Tried the Terimayo ^^ totally recommend it.

The 'street meat' as it is called in Toronto is awesome! When I went to U of T there were woman outside the main building that had the best hotdogs. I think there were roughly 1.50? somthing like that...!

In Van, I really like the place outside Futureshop on Broadway... best dogs in Vancouver. I prefer the Kosher hotdogs, which are imported from Montreal.... awesomeness! PLus they make their own buns which are of the best quality!

I will try that JApanese one next week though/

I gotta ask, why are people so stingy with their money where you have to be like "omg wtf 5 dollar quality smokie is too much!!!!"

I would seriously rather pay 5 dollars for a smokie that was made with quality ingrediants, flown in from some jewish deli than eat a 1.50 shit smokie made horribly.

Since I live kinda far from downtown, I tried to make one myself today!

The girlfriend and I both had the Terimayo before we went to see Spiderman 3 at the Paramount yesterday. It was a little expensive but it tasted great!

The location's pretty good but it would be even better if they moved down a block to Robson @ Burrard.

I wonder how much this guy's sales have increased since this thread started lol. Went there with a friend yesterday afternoon and had the Oroshi (the Miso one was sold out already). While there, there was a group of people who I bet were also RSers there haha. (You were the people who asked him what time he was going to close and said you were definitely coming back for more haha.) Sat around and ate, and when walking by again, there was an even bigger group of people there.

The Oroshi was really really yummy! I can't wait to have another one - a must have everytime I'm in downtown now!

lol well when word of mouth through a source of some kind get's around to people. they like to try new things that are unique or differen't from the casual stuff.. i mean alot of people probably have never had a "japadog"in their life ..until RS :D when something is posted on rev i bet it usually attracts peoples attention to try it out which is a good thing because thats whats this forums for.. i recommend using http://www.dinehere.ca/results.asp?l=24&o=r_name&s=ASC&a=SEARCH to search around for other good eatery's in vancouver etc. :D even review one or two of your favourite places or post them on here

I've had the pleasure to sample Teri mayo and oroshi.

Out of the 2 I prefer oroshi the best.

I've haven't had a chance to try the miso mayo just yet. Can't wait for this

On a side note, I noticed they are opened late on Saturdays now. I managed to get a hot dog at about 1030 at night. The problem was I dunno if it was my stomach (granted I usually don't get stomach problems) or it was the hot dog itself the very next day I had the biggest stomach ache ever.

I am not intending to bash japadog. As a matter of fact I'll even make sure to eat one everytime I'm there. Just wondering if anyone else had the problem too.

After trying the Terimayo for my first visit I got the Oroshi and the Misomayo on my second trip (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ekim19/sets/72157600233730756/) (Last 7 pics). The Misomayo had good flavours but the bratwurst in the Oroshi was super juicy. The turkey smokey in Misomayo had a tougher skin.

On my third visit I just got a regular bratwurst and covered it in wasabi mayo, yum.

$4.50 for a Oroshi. The other regular hotdogs are the same as the other hotdog stands.

Alphamale
11-01-2007, 03:00 PM
The price isn't expensive and is on par with other hotdog stands. It's only a buck or so more for something special, like Senna said. It's worth it. They're independent, unlike all the other hot dog joints.

Mmm...I'm so happy this stand is right next to my work. I think I'll go and buy one tomorrow just before work. All three of their specialties are excellent. It's pretty cute when you see their baby with them, but kinda sad too.

Wow those look really yummy, are they only open during the day? I've been looking for a new place to eat when I have my break at work... but that's not until after 11pm normally.

Maybe I'll take a trip down there tomorrow and see if they're there to try one =)

You can just buy the Japanese mayo from TNT and mix in wasabi to taste. It is pretty easy to do and doesn't require cooking.

Many want hot dog vendors to stay despite proposal for healthier food options

Click here to find out more!
Thursday, March 06 - 06:40:00 AM Mike Lloyd/Province

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's not the healthiest meal around but they sure are tasty! News1130 is on the street, grilling you about a proposal in Vancouver that could spell the death of the traditional hot dog cart.

The idea is to make street food in Vancouver healthier and more varied. A proposal by city councillor Heather Deal would see hot dog carts offering things like fruit and vegetables, locally grown and produced food and more choices to reflect the culture mosaic in Vancouver.

It's modeled after an experiment in New York that saw the spread of fruit and veggie carts into low income neighbourhoods. But when it comes down to a banana or a fully loaded sizzling and savoury bratwurst, what are you going to choose?

Ayla says it depends if she's intoxicated or not. After the bar it's a dog, and after the gym, it's fruit. Tyler is originally from New York and says he'd definitely go for the NY-style tube steak. He asks why would you buy fruit when you can pack an apple with you?

Others say in a city of hot yoga, juice bars and dental spas, we can't afford to give up one of the last bastions of sinfully good, unhealthy snacks. The proposal will be debated by city council next week.

Is the hot dog good because there's special type of sausage they use or are they using normal sausages with their own special condiments?

New menu!!! Kurobuta 黒豚 $5.50!!!
Kurobuta(black hog) is the most highly prized pork in all of Japan.
Kurobuta is 100% pure all-natural Berkshire pork. That exists today for Kurobuta- the "Kobe beef" of pork.

anyone try this yet? and what's on it? i will next time i go.

I ordered the Kurobuta... without any additional toppings.. it was very good.. i didn't want to loose the flavour of the pork with too much... so i ahd a bit of mayo and some chili powder on it... =) and just a smudge of ketchup... and it taste great.. i would say it is the second best dog they have.

my choices are
1. terimayo
2. kurobuta
3. miso mayo

i haven't tried the oroshi or wahtever.. will giev it a try next time..

problem with eating japadogs now is that its too cold.. =) hahaha !!! the hotdog cools down too quickly.

I prefer the Miso mayo (the one on the right) the most out of the three.
Terimayo is good.. but I'm not a big beef fan.. but for those who are.. it's for you!~
Oroshi..... not so much. =P The bratwurst and the grated.. whatever it is in English doesn't work for me.

Alphamale

The Miso Mayo is also the most expensive of the bunch @ $5.00.

I had some today too. I had a teri-mayo cuz I'm cheap like that and it gives me a good fix.

Went to the Burrard and Pender location today. Quite a long line and wait at lunch time, but seemed like its mostly tourists. I think the business people are turned off by the long wait (I waited in line over 20 minutes). Got the Okura and Korokke. The Okura was really quite sickening, although I think the japa-lady put on much more okra then I saw other people getting. The Korokke dog is my new favourite, its simply fantastic. Big strip of mashed potato gets layered over the hotdog, then covered in cabbage, tonkatsu sauce, and mayo. The Korokke dog is $6.00, but I can see why since it does include more topping than any other hotdog there.

HOLY FUCK!

Does anyone know approx. how much they're making per month or year? Just an estimate?

I drove by Japadogs on Burrard today at around 4-5pm and HOLY SHIT! The lineup was HUGE...like almost a full block with people waiting in line for a damn hot-dog..

The hot dogs aren't cheap either, as they're $5-6 for a hot-dog and some people would probably get a drink too($1 or so)

Also does anyone know if they have a permit to open a hot-dog stand there on Burrard or whats the deal with it(IE: How do you get it and is it hard to obtain a permit? etc)?

Thanks!

Meowjin
05-25-2009, 11:55 AM
I'm guessing 4-6k a day

at 5 dollars a hotdog and the approximate cost per hotdog is 75 cents with labor.

Doesn't include drinks either.

Their rent is like 20 dollars a month. It's not "hard" to obtain a permit. Just need the money. And an inspection by a health inspector.

I'm asking because I'm shocked at how theirs only one food-stand on that street, compared to one street with like 50 stands, so I was curious as to how the process works exactly, now please stop talking to me and go to your Bikram Yoga classes okay?

Japadog is opened right by Sutton Place Hotel so I'm going to assume the city issued them the street vendor license as the only place on that stretch of the area.

I went by the Japadog stand by Scotiabank thearter this past weekend and the line up was long (from the corner till the end of the Sutton place wineshop).

Upon closer inspection they had 2 lineups. One for ordering and one for pickup. Its a good system to try and separate the lineups but the thing is hot dogs should be fast food and I'm pretty sure whoever that lined up that day waited at least 15-20mins for a hotdog

Re: the guy asking how much they make and how they do it.

Not sure but I'm pretty sure they only make a killing during the nice sunny weekends. If it was a regular weekday or rainy day I would think they make a lot less.

Its good that the couple that use to run the one stand with their kid has now hired full time help.

I drove by Japadogs on Burrard today at around 4-5pm and HOLY SHIT! The lineup was HUGE...

You guys need to stop going to the original location and start going to the new location at Burrard and Pender. Only there can you get the kick ass exclusive korokke dog...

.
